The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Pulling out prematurely again? Have people learnt nothing over the years?

> There is nothing good coming out of this.

The only 'good' I can think of is that they're bringing their troops home which is always nice, plus people in the country might be glad not to have a continual foreign army on their soil, though the fear is that another group like Isis might rise again,we'll see

The GOP just really needs a victory right about now. So they just... gave themselves one. I guess.

[up] x3 It's like South Vietnam all over again. Except much, much worse.

Syria is in for a bleak future. Because Assad is sure as sunrise going to clamp down so hard on his country it'll make Little Rocket Man's antics seem like a tea party in comparison.

It's a dark day for the Middle East. Awful lot of those, these days.

I hold the secrets of the machine.

Oh, boy. I look forward to three days from now when they start batting around a new horrible law claiming we need it to protect us from the ostensibly defeated ISIS.

The contradictions in this administration are absurd. "I single-handedly defeated ISIS (which Obama couldn't do), they're wiped off the map, we can pull out of Syria." Then a minute later they're like, "ISIS is constantly trying to enter the country via the Mexican border! We need the wall NOW!"

Which is it?

Neither, either, or both, depending on which narrative they're trying to spin at the moment. That's pretty much how reality works for the GOP now.

Listening to a few news sources regarding the judge going off on Flynn, most of them seem to think that this I indeed about getting Flynn to cough up some more information about two of his business partners who were also part of Trump's transition team and had a hand in planning the kidnapping of that Turkish cleric in Pennsylvania.

Yeah, this draw down is a terrible idea. It’s coming at a time when the Pentagon has been trying to increase its presence in Syria too.

Heard the withdrawal is due to the imminent Turkish invasion into Syria and as member of Nato America isn't going to fight their ally so they're pulling their troops, this in turn may be so Turkey stops talking about the murderer,as deal or as a favour perhaps

Wasn't it just a week ago the government said we'd stay in Syria indefinitely?

Trump =/= the government (or military, for that matter).

In good news, though, the Asylum revision issued by Jeff Sessions was struck down by the Washington District Court, stating:

Judge Emmet Sullivan of the U.S. District Court in Washington ruled the harsher Justice Department policies ordered by former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions were "arbitrary, capricious and in violation of the immigration laws."

Because "it is the will of Congress — not the whims of the Executive—that determines the standard for expedited removal, the Court finds that those policies are unlawful," Sullivan wrote in his 107-page decision.

He permanently blocked the government "from continuing to apply those policies and from removing plaintiffs who are currently in the United States without first providing credible fear determinations consistent with the immigration laws," and ordered the feds "to return to the United States the plaintiffs who were unlawfully deported and to provide them with new credible fear determinations consistent with the immigration laws."

Emphasis added, because damn is that going to be a lot more expensive than just doing it the right way the first time!

[up]That implies the Republicans ever cared about cost except as a club to beat the left with. Hell, Mulvaney wanted to rename the CFPB at a cost of millions of dollars just to be a dick. Thankfully his successor reversed that.

I really, really shouldn't have read the comments on that one. So many instances of "These people should be jailed for helping illegals!" and "What about our homeless veterans?!"

mod edit: not a good look. don't assume you can speak for people with autism

I wonder what his supporters who were read Hitler quotes and said they don't support Hitler but would support Trump making the same quotes would say now that Trump is now officially doing the same thing as Hitler.

And I may have asked this before, in fact I'm sure of it but humor me. In light of this how real is the threat that in the face of any ramifications over this, impeachment or evidence of papers that were not supposed to exist being found signed by Trump proving Russian collusion, how real is the threat that his supporters will attempt to launch a civil war?

Sure people with autism won't mind that I say this

I have autism and I'm offended that you even said that. Seriously, what the hell?

with threatening to shut down the government over the wall Trump has gone full Hitler.

I think you and me have very different definitions of what 'gone full Hitler' means. Nevermind that this isn't the first time Trump has threatened to shut down the government over the wall. He threatened the same thing last year, case you forgot.

And I may have asked this before, in fact I'm sure of it but humor me. What are the odds Mueller indicts Roger Stone? Wa Po is reporting that he's asking the House for the transcripts of their closed door hearing with him.
