Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In July, Tarrant County Republican Party Chairman Darl Easton appointed Shahid Shafi, a trauma surgeon, to serve as vice chairman. The move sparked opposition from precinct chairwoman Dorrie O'Brien and a few allies. O'Brien has been urging his removal, making allegations that Shafi has links to Islamic terrorists and is beholden to Sharia law.
The Texas GOP responded with a formal rebuke of O'Brien and fellow agitators, and a reaffirmation of support for Shafi, in a unanimous vote of the executive committee, with one member abstaining. Prominent Texas Republicans also have been condemning the effort to remove Shafi because of his religion.
That's surprisingly..... reasonable of them. I'm not expecting it to last, mind you, but that's just surprising how not terrible it is.
I find this bit kinda hilarious though.
“He’s a nice guy who helped start a Republican club and has gone to state [conventions], but has never left Islam. If you all were truly the conservatives and Christians you say you are, you’d witness him into the body of Christ,” she said in a recent Facebook post, the American-Statesman reported.

In two unrelated pieces of news, but both related to immigration/the border wall:
ICE Encourages Sponsors to Come Forward for Detained Children, Then Arrests Them
. Or as I've seen it called on Twitter, empathy entrapment.
Government Workers Start Building Border Wall Without Permission, Destroy Portions of National Butterfly Center; Lawsuit is Now Pending
. Just FYI, this center is a key point in butterfly and bird migration (so it can't simply be moved to a different location), as well as housing a number of endangered species. So if this goes through it will have a huge effect on the environment, as well as pollination, farming, and food supplies.
Just more of the daily dose of petty evil. M84's signature once again comes to mind.
This section of ICE (I forget what it's called) definitely needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.
In other news, Cohen got three years for his half-assed attempt to cooperate while not cooperating
.

Slightly concerned about that border wall issue. This is Texas, and if government workers get shot trying to build the rogue wall, shit is going to fly. And while strategically, the idea of Texas militiamen fighting the Trump administration sounds like a cause for popcorn, do we really want workers who are Just Following Orders caught in this particular crossfire, especially when the Trump Administration can't properly manage a standoff with violent lunatics?

After the 2018 midterms, Texas Republicans are afraid that Texas will become the Gulf Coast California in due course if they don't shed their "party of racism" image.
That and if my understanding of Texan politics is correct there is a split between pro-business and socially conservative Texas Republicans which played out around the bathroom bill a while ago and now seems to carry over.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAlexandria Ocasio-Cortez has said a thing
:
Sometimes political media is too fixated on personalities instead of policies.
The whole country JUST went through an exhausting midterm election. We need a break.
Can we instead talk about healthcare, a living wage, legalizing cannabis, GND, & other issues?
Good. Someone had to say these things at some point.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI totally get that you're joking but this is less than funny when we consider that some of the leadership of the Women's March have ties to an anti-Semitic and LGBT-phobic hate group and has said similarly anti-Semitic things.
Just a heads up.

The left is certainly not immune to bigotry, just look at how the communist countries treated homosexuals or hated minorities.
The Women's March's leaders have refused to distance themselves with the Nation of Islam
an LGBT-phobic and anti-Semitic hate group.
And they've been recorded blaming Jews for the Slave Trade

Despite being communist the worst were really just right wing authoritarians under the pretence of being 'left wing',that is to say that while there can be left bigotry the countries that claim they're left usually aren't and shouldn't be used an example of how the left can have bigotry
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverYeah, calling Communism leftist is a bit inaccurate. In theory it's egalitarian but in practice it is anything but.

Yeah, usually the left can be progresive or REALLY conservative, here in latin america we have to deal with very regresive lefties.

"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"No true Leftist, got it.
Honestly, any definition of Leftism that has Communism as right-wing is clearly just using right to mean "anything I don't like". Which isn't a very useful definition, if being authoritarian makes one right-wing then the term loses any worth it might have.
