Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Don't know if this was posted yet, I'd say it's worth posting in here due to those particular ones.
Whatever, Time. We're not forgetting that you made Trump person of the year in 2016, asshats. You're basically awarding the title to victims of your previous pick.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.44 Ex-Senators wrote an op-ed to the current Senate, telling them to defend Democracy.
As former members of the U.S. Senate, Democrats and Republicans, it is our shared view that we are entering a dangerous period, and we feel an obligation to speak up about serious challenges to the rule of law, the Constitution, our governing institutions and our national security.
We are on the eve of the conclusion of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation and the House’s commencement of investigations of the president and his administration. The likely convergence of these two events will occur at a time when simmering regional conflicts and global power confrontations continue to threaten our security, economy and geopolitical stability.
It is a time, like other critical junctures in our history, when our nation must engage at every level with strategic precision and the hand of both the president and the Senate.
We are at an inflection point in which the foundational principles of our democracy and our national security interests are at stake, and the rule of law and the ability of our institutions to function freely and independently must be upheld.
During our service in the Senate, at times we were allies and at other times opponents, but never enemies. We all took an oath swearing allegiance to the Constitution. Whatever united or divided us, we did not veer from our unwavering and shared commitment to placing our country, democracy and national interest above all else.
At other critical moments in our history, when constitutional crises have threatened our foundations, it has been the Senate that has stood in defense of our democracy. Today is once again such a time.
Regardless of party affiliation, ideological leanings or geography, as former members of this great body, we urge current and future senators to be steadfast and zealous guardians of our democracy by ensuring that partisanship or self-interest not replace national interest.

There's a movie quote I love from My Fellow Americans.
"I was TIME magazine's person of the year."
"So was Hitler!"
"But not twice!"

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I found a truly enlightening article, it has filled me with euphoria and I have to share that feeling with all of you.
Biden Should Run on a Unity Ticket With Romney
I shouldn't have to explain what's wrong with this glorious delusion, a unity ticket is an absolutely terrible idea that would please no-one and I highly doubt Biden is dumb enough to consider it.
Still, I have to respect the sheer hackery of the author. Well played.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangMaybe the Progressive candidate can pick him.
"They've learned absolutely nothing from 2018 and I love it"
Remember that the Republican leadership actually doesnt care about their own constituents. They represent the oligarchs who fund them, and so long as Republican voters wont vote for Democrats over social issues, they feel safe.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.Biden needs to go away. Now. Yesterday. Last week. Go away!
Here’s a funny article
which (correctly in my opinion) argues that Bernie should NOT RUN.
Yes I know, that's why I love it.
They're morons who are stubbornly ignoring the losses their party experienced in 2018 and could later experience again in 2020, it's not just that they're indifferent to the will of the populace, they're actively stupid about it.
One could have that elitist motivation while still being smart/aware enough to realize that the current course just isn't working, but they're too invested and delusional for that.
Agreed, he's just from a different era and really needs to step back for younger candidates to have their own opportunity. We shouldn't be a Gerontocracy.
I couldn't agree more, he's done very well for himself and I can respect that but he's just too old and IMO problematic. I'd much rather have a younger Progressive face who I can trust to properly diversify their attention instead of being a glorified single-issue-wonk.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI can't tell if this is supposed to be satirical or serious, and that matters because if it's supposed to be serious, I don't think I agree with it.

It's not like a strongly-regulated private market is any more difficult for Republicans to screw up than single payer. Arguably the most important part is that single-payer is harder to get rid of subtly.
That and it might have better luck counteracting absurd healthcare prices.
I don't think Biden should run, but he's definitely useful in the elder statesman fashion, as an attack dog and talking head who can say what he wants without risk of alienating anyone.
And the Democrats would be stupid to not roll out the Obamas during the next election.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I don't agree with it either, but considering that the article is clearly written from a pro-Sanders POV (which makes it all the more useful) I think some questionable bits were inevitable. What ultimately matters is the message which IMO is a very true and necessary one.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang

It would seem we are front row spectators to the slow, ungainly demise of the Republican Party.
It would be tragic if it weren't so richly deserved.
I hold the secrets of the machine.
