Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm more bothered by people trying to pretend he was a good president than anything else. I can understand wanting to be respectful to the dead and their families, but if there isn't much good to say about the person then we should move on and not try to rehabilitate their reputation in a misguided pretense at being respectful.
Yeah I just... don't have anything to say about him. I'm happy he was single term? I'm upset that his funeral motorcade will upset my commute?

It is never soon enough to write his eulogy.
Here lies Trump, the original annoying orange. The one who claimed he could grab any pussy he wanted but frequently paid porn stars to have sex with. Alleged 45th president of the United States. Putin's personal lapdog and brown noser. Doer of many biggest deeds, believe him. Really liked gold, including showers. He had tiny hands and a toadstool shaped dick

Inter arma enim silent leges> I'm honestly very curious what the reaction will be when he does.
I dont think people will be dancing in streets or mourning his demise,he's achieved so little and done so much harm they'll probably shrug their collective shoulders with the effect of "Who cares anymore?"
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverI think its more he was surrounded on every end by WORSE republican presidents, Regan came right before him, Bush Jr and Trump came after.
If you get shot 3 times, being stabbed in between looks pleasant by comparison.
Other than Gerald Ford (who no one seems to remember), he's the only Republican POTUS post Eisenhower who comes close to decent. And a lot of people focus in on his successes (most notably Desert Shield and Desert Storm) and the fact that he was in office when the Soviets finally imploded.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. An Iraqi occupation in 1990 still would have been a quagmire (all the ingredients were there, save maybe the neocons crazy enough to completely dismantle the Iraqi state afterwards. Maybe), the anti-Baghdad coalition would have collapsed instantly (getting the ME to work with NATO was difficult enough), and I'm not sure that the American public would have supported such a massive operation without something like a post 9/11 fervor.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I find the argument, "It would have been a quagmire" to fall apart given it allowed a genocide to take place. International law says we need to intervene when that happens.
And whatever you believe quagmire wise, it couldn't have been worse than what did happen. And would have been substantially better if the Iraqi military wasn't dissolved (in which case the worst case scenario is another Baathist dictator takes Saddam's place but without his insane sons or a genocide).

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Joe Biden Says He’s the ‘Most Qualified Person in the Country’ to be President.
It's interesting that they don't mention that Biden has already run before, and both times, it was an utter disaster.

I know this may seem nitpicky, but his vote in favour of the Defense of Marriage Act, which ensured that same-sex couples would never be viewed as equal or get the same benefits as opposite sex ones for two decades really stings for me. Also, Anita Hill.
This is why I don't want him running, he has enough gaffes and baggage that he would be a very flawed if not outright unreliable candidate.
He seems like a legitimately nice guy but that's not enough to be President.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI really, really don't want us to run an old white guy. That shouldn't be the lesson we've taken from Clinton losing, and it shouldn't look like it's the lesson we've taken. Biden, like Sanders, is older than the sort of person I'd like to run. We need someone who looks far better in comparison to Trump. So while he's wheezing and ranting, there'll be someone who looks younger, smarter, and more competent going against him. Biden is not that.
Beto O'Rourke is 46.
Anyway, I do kind of lean to "too young" being worse than "too old" here. Although someone like Biden, any black marks on his record aside, still doesn't leave me very confident just because he'll be pushing 80 for campaigning/possibly winning.
And "how likely is someone to die in office" does strike as something that, while uncomfortable, should be considered.

Both are solid choices. Both are also far too young to take seriously. After 10 years, sure.
They didn't say anything of the sort, there is a difference between not wanting a septuagenarian and supporting an inexperienced politician like Cortez and to a lesser extent O'Rourke.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang

I'm not much for sap, even if I can feel bad for the dog, but I still remain conflicted about situations like Bush's.
On the one hand, I'm annoyed by the glossing over the horrible things about him, but I find it hard to just get behind positions like Wise Willow which seems to be "he was a horrible person, let's move on."
I've said it before, I guess it kind of goes with my idea that it's kind of hard not to be involved with some terrible things while the President. I don't mean that as an excuse, and obviously some are better than others, just my thoughts on the matter.
Edit: To further clarify, I'm not trying to imply everyone should mourn his death. You can't really dictate how anyone else feels about things like this.
