Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."...and so he dies, seeing his political party twisted by itself into the party of a man he despised.
He died after seeing his own son humiliated, destroyed and reduced to "please clap". After his wife died.
He died after one of the ugliest elections in Modern American History.
Honestly, it does not surprise me much at all he died. He basically lost everything by this point.

The White House's statement contains a line that obviously unintentionally shows the divide between the two presidents. I almost can't help but think whoever actually wrote it did so intentionally as a dig. See the bolded line.
Through his essential authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family, and country, President Bush inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service—to be, in his words, “a thousand points of light” illuminating the greatness, hope, and opportunity of America to the world.
President Bush always found a way to set the bar higher. As a young man, he captained the Yale baseball team, and then went on to serve as the youngest aviator in the United States Navy during the Second World War. Later in life, he rose to the pinnacle of American politics as a Congressman from Texas, envoy to China, Director of Central Intelligence, Vice President of eight years to President Ronald Reagan, and finally President of the United States.
With sound judgement, common sense, and unflappable leadership, President Bush guided our Nation, and the world, to a peaceful and victorious conclusion of the Cold War. As President, he set the stage for the decades of prosperity that have followed. And through all that he accomplished, he remained humble, following the quiet call to service that gave him a clear sense of direction.
Along with his full life of service to country, we will remember President Bush for his devotion to family—especially the love of his life, Barbara. His example lives on, and will continue to stir future Americans to pursue a greater cause. Our hearts ache with his loss, and we, with the American people, send our prayers to the entire Bush family, as we honor the life and legacy of 41.

Rest in the Peace, George H. W. Bush. May he be reunited with his wife, Barbara.
Moving on to another topic...
You know, with all talk about Robert Mueller lately, I'm surprised that no one has added him to the Memetic Badass page yet.

I wasn't suggesting the sort, just saying that the poor guy died after so much was done to break the Bush Family, and the party he probably attached a lot of affection to was twisted.
I'm really not looking forward to the days after Trump leaves office, because due to his actions the Republicans can't go back on this. The Trump Family controls the course of this ship, all the way to the end.

He didn't start any conflict, Saddam Hussein straight up invaded an independent nation. It ended quickly and decisively and I wish Obama had adopted some of his strategies when it came to dealing with the recent annexation of Crimea.
It used to be against international law to invade and conquer other nations.
But seriously, the first Iraq War is probably one of the most justified wars in modern memory.
Are people really saying that the invasion of Kuwait should have been unresponded to?
Arguably, the biggest criticism is they DIDN'T remove Saddam Hussein when the entire world was there and he was committing genocide.

At this point, yeah. We may as well call their bluff. Provide lethal weapons and hard support to the Ukrainians, because that’s the only message the Russians will understand.
Invading and conquering other countries is fine, as long as you have a good reason. What’s illegal is a war of aggression, and I’ll point out it’s only been illegal since around the 1950s and was legal before that.
