The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So it seems like one congressional district race in North Carolina isn't certified yet as a fraud investigation is ongoing. 538 discussion about this.

Funny that for all of the republican's whining about rampant voter fraud, the only true possible instance of it was done by one of their state parties (of course it had to be North Carolina).

Life is unfair...

So..I have a cold so I currently have a hard time to focus on the numbers...WHAT exactly is going on there what is so shifty? Must be bad if even the local Republicans agree that there is the need for an investigation.

Apparently people went door to door in rural areas to collect absentee ballots as well as absentee ballots being sent despite not requesting it.

I seriously question why that gun apparently did not have its safety turned on.

Funnily (or not) enough, the most popular type of concealed carry handgun in the US does not have a manual safety. On most concealed carry handguns the safety is built into the trigger, and disengages automatically when the trigger is pulled, with the reasoning being that not having to disengage the safety manually first will allow you to start shooting at something faster.

American gun culture is pretty insane these days.

[up] And that’s what people causally shove that in their belt, no Holster or anything?

The fact that it happened in a walmart, just makes it even more of a Uniquely ‘Murican experience.

Is that Trump or Parody Trump?

And I don't own a gun. Putting my 6 feet longbow in my belt would just look silly.

Carrying without a holster is discouraged, but usually considered perfectly fine if the need arises. That should tell you how crazy things have gotten, that it’s considered better to carry without a holster than to go unarmed. You can blame the NRA for that one.

It also doesn’t help that the most popular concealed carry position (known as appendix carry, where the gun is placed in a 1 o’clock position inside the belt) ensures your gun is pointing directly at your groin.

Of course, pointing the gun at the penis is absolutely intentional, but in the sense of "gun is extension of manhood, point right at dick to draw attention to both gun and dick".

To change the subject, does anyone else have any idea what to make of the Tweeter in Chiefs latest rant?

Oh, I get it! I am a very good developer, happily living my life, when I see our Country going in the wrong direction (to put it mildly). Against all odds, I decide to run for President & continue to run my business-very legal & very cool, talked about it on the campaign trail.......Lightly looked at doing a building somewhere in Russia. Put up zero money, zero guarantees and didn’t do the project. Witch Hunt!

Was it even written by him you think? The last few haven’t (they presumably had to wrestle the phone out of his tiny hand, because they were way to cohearant), but I’m not sure about this one.

Trump was going to rent a property to Putin in Moscow. Now that Mueller has discovered a lot of people are side-eyeing him and he is upset about that.

That's typical Trump style and do we have evidence that other people are allowed to post under his name? To me it sounds like he's saying that the "Trump in Moscow" project was only a thought and not something that was actually planned to be built.

At this point I'm half expecting it to be a massive con and all his tweets are written by staffers, the accounts main purpose being to drawn headlines and attention away from they're actually doing

[up] You can tell which ones are written by him, and which ones are not.

It's the difference between this:

When Mueller does his final report, will he be covering all of his conflicts of interest in a preamble, will he be recommending action on all of the crimes of many kinds from those “on the other side”(whatever happened to Podesta?), and will he be putting in statements from.........hundreds of people closely involved with my campaign who never met, saw or spoke to a Russian during this period? So many campaign workers, people inside from the beginning, ask me why they have not been called (they want to be). There was NO Collusion & Mueller knows it!

Sebastian Gorka, a very talented man who I got to know well while he was working at the White House, has just written an excellent book, “Why We Fight.” Much will be learned from this very good read!

Steel Dynamics announced that it will build a brand new 3 million ton steel mill in the Southwest that will create 600 good-paying U.S. JOBS. Steel JOBS are coming back to America, just like I predicted. Congratulations to Steel Dynamics!

and this:

....hundreds of people closely involved with my campaign who never met, saw or spoke to a Russian during this period? So many campaign workers, people inside from the beginning, ask me why they have not been called (they want to be). There was NO Collusion & Mueller knows it!

So great that oil prices are falling (thank you President T). Add that, which is like a big Tax Cut, to our other good Economic news. Inflation down (are you listening Fed)!

So much happening with the now discredited Witch Hunt. This total Hoax will be studied for years!

The ones written by staffers tend to be more coherent and use longer and more complex words and sentence structures.

I think I heard he was going to gift a penthouse apartment worth millions to Putin as one of the ways to get the Trump tower finally put up in Moscow, something he’s been trying to do basically since the fall of the Soviet Union at the start of the 90s.

Now it’s become yet another point that shows the connections between him and Russia, and how far he was willing to kowtow to Russian leadership to get what he wanted.

Let's say we actually manage to get impeachment proceedings going for Trump. In 2020, at the same time that he's actively campaigning for re-election. In the event that he wins re-election prior to the impeachment hearing finalizing its decision, would he then be impeached for his first term or second?
His first term. The 116th Congress meets from January 3rd 2019 to January 3rd 2021 — the second half of Trump's first term. The 117th Congress meets from January 3rd 2021 to January 3rd 2023 — the first half of a theoretical Trump second term. If the 116th Congress impeaches him, then they're booting him out of his first term, because that's when they're in session. If he gets reelected in 2020, then he starts his second term during the 117th Congress — which is free to impeach him again, should they wish too.

I feel trigger safeties are an oxymoron
It's to prevent the gun from firing without the trigger being pulled, which is an important safety measure. It prevents Reliably Unreliable Guns, basically. Since the gun is supposed to fire when you pull the trigger, some people consider this sufficient, even though it doesn't protect against accidentally pulling the trigger.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
