Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Because that's not the point. The point is that while Trump's policies and those pursued by Congress and the states have practical significance, much talk about Trump is about his personality traits and public image which don't have that significance.
Besides, a lot of Trump's policies aren't his policies.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanBesides, a lot of Trump's policies aren't his policies.
Which is nonsense, are you seriously suggesting that the personality and public image of the President doesn't matter? Seriously?
There is absolutely practical significance to the kind of man the President is and how he behaves, I don't understand how anyone can seriously claim otherwise.

Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangRaids by law enforcement at Deutsche Bank regarding money laundering and a Chicago Alderman whose law firm did Trump Organization taxes for 12 years. Not confirmed yet one or both are connected to Trump, but it looks likely, particularly since the bank was one of the few willing to do business with Trump and the Trump family appeared to be trying to keep business they did with the bank clandestine and hidden.
Still developing, haven’t seen a full story on this.

It's about the Panama papers. I doubt that the Deutsche Bank actually has anything which could connect it to Russian money laundering in Germany. They do this kind of stuff over Malta for a reason.
(Also, not everything is about Trump...between the Panama papers and the Cum Ex fraud we have more than enough to worry about).

There is practical significance to the things he does and publicly says, but speculating future rants based on an armchair diagnosis of uncomfirmed medical disorders is of little practical value.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Another Ferguson activist, Bassem Masri,
is dead. He’s the fourth Ferguson activist to die under suspicious circumstances in the last couple years. Three different Ferguson activists have been found shot to death in their cars; two were ruled a suicide and the third a murder. Yet all three cars had been set on fire. After the person died. And there’s another suspicious death in the Ferguson area; a black teenage boy whose mother is an activist was found hanging from a tree in her backyard earlier this year. Suffice to say, she doesn’t believe the cops’ claim that it was a suicide.
What the shit?
Part of me refuses to believe this can be true.
Another part of me refuses to believe this could be anything but true.
And a third part of me wants to see some evidence, just because there's been so many wild right wing conspiracy theories that I wouldn't put it past someone to attempt to start a left wing conspiracy theory.
Angry gets shit done."Which is nonsense, are you seriously suggesting that the personality and public image of the President doesn't matter? Seriously?"
That is absolutely what I am suggesting. He has no coherent policy position, political vision or personal beliefs. He was always intended to be a distraction from the tax cuts, the deregulation, and the defunding of programs. At that he is suceeding brilliantly, at least so far as the media is concerned.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart. This is kinda hilarious. A republican Rep from Kentucky tweeted
about how now that people have the idea of Medicare for all, how long before they are like =#foodStampsForAll
Naturally twitter has quickly jumped on to him for that.
Isn't Food Stamps one of the more effective government programs by the numbers? I think you might be on to something here! [2]
Have you considered changing party affiliations, and running as a socialist? The world needs more brave and kind men with bold ideas like yours! [3]
Food Stamps For All is a great idea, thanks for sharing. I'm happy to hashtag it so we can get a following. I have never heard a more humanitarian platform. My vote to any candidate that supports this! #FoodStampsForAll [4]
#FoodStampsForAll is a great idea. That way we don't incentivize people to not work by taking away there food money. Perhaps we can incentivize it a bit further to say double benefits on fresh food or at Farmer's Market the way @Healthy Boston has done.
[5]
Also, his promotional hashtag/slogan is apparently, #SassyWithMassie

I can give you no coherent policy positions or political vision, but I'd definitely say he has personal beliefs. They mostly amount to "immigrants and black people bad, and women are sex objects" but those are beliefs. And they fit in nicely with the Republican Party as is.
And because he's been more open about blatantly expressing those beliefs that most other Republicans, more people feel comfortable doing the same, which is a major issue.

My apologies, I just saw a breaking headline and a bit of speculation. I hesitated to bring it up, and if I were at home rather than at work on my phone I would have tried to investigate a little more first

You are not the only one jumping on it, but this is basically the result of the German government finally listening to all the people being feed up and doing some proper investigation. They are also investigating Amazon for breaking anti-trust rules with their monopoly due to their marketplace.

Sure, if you ignore the power the President has and the damage he's caused to our soft power (amongst other things).
For the life of me, I don't understand why people can't comprehend the idea that both Congress and the Presidency matter and we don't actually need to pick one or the other to care about.
