The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In other news, Gallup has Trump's weekly disapproval at 60% (38% approve), the highest its been since late 2017 (when the tax cut was passed).

Sure, its only one week, and Gallup is constantly going up and down each week (often alternating), but its something.

I'm starting to wonder how much approval ratings mean in the grand scheme of things.

Pod Save America discussed Fox News over Thanksgiving and had a number of suggestions on how to curtail their influence. I can't remember them all, but they put the most emphasis on was going after their advertisers.

As the folks at 538 said, the result of this year's midterms are pretty much consistent with what you would expect from a president with such a low approval rating.

[up]Their House and Senate projections (in terms of net seat change) were basically dead on as well.

All things said, the Midterms went as the polling predicted, almost to the letter.

Sure, but projections are only as good as the data you have and for special elections, the data tends to be spotty because it is difficult to predict who will come out to vote and who won't. Will overconfidence ensure that Republicans stay at home? Will the Democrats be energized or dispirited because the chance is so small in the first place? Are there maybe more voters who draw a line when "hanging" is thrown into the room than one would expect?

Also: Did you notice that a corruption charge which was properly investigated and ended with the accused not being convicted is considered "baggage", while those same voters who will see it that way are obviously really into the innocent into proven guilty concept regarding accusations of sexual assault towards a potential supreme court judge?

Bad analogy, as Alabama is a separate state from Mississippi.

Trump White House issues climate change report undermining its own policy

The latest installment of the National Climate Assessment, a major government report on climate change, is once again revealing the mess of contradictions between the Trump administration’s messages and its actions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the face of rising temperatures.

The report is required by a law in place since 1990, which is why the White House has to release it, however grudgingly. However, they did rush to publish the assessment ahead of schedule on Black Friday, a move some scientists saw as an attempt to bury the findings. And now that it’s out, Trump told reporters Monday, he “didn’t believe it.”

The National Climate Assessment draws on input from 13 federal agencies, including NASA and the Defense Department, with contributions from 300 scientists. The latest volume spans more than 1,600 pages, and a key recurring theme is that climate change will be devastating to the US economy.

So he wants his own version of RT? Yeah, bet that will go over well....

With a few exceptions, Trump is despised by the populations' of nearly every country. Sub 30% approval is not uncommon.

Theoretically, you could merge the functions of PBS (educational centered) and Voice of America (pro-US political advocacy). Funnily enough, I'd be interested in an American attempt at a BBC-esque channel. We certainly could have more narmy period dramas that way. [lol][lol]

Details to come soon.
