Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It’s important to remember that Russia is acting from a position of Weakness. The economy is failing, and they are an objectively falling power. The reason they are using Assymetric Active Measures style tactics, is because of that weakness.
Doesn’t make them any less dangerous, but it’s still important to keep in mind for perspective.
For those who were curious, Mia Love, the first Republican woman African-American in Congress, has conceded her loss this morning. Ben McAdams will be the sole Democrat in Utah's congressional delegation (4 representatives and 2 senators).
Love said that McAdams had stooped to making a "false case" against her during the election, and that Utah politics were likely to be nastier in the future as a result. She also took a last jab at Trump, saying that in Trump's world there are "no real relationships — just transactions. That is an insufficient way to implement your service and policy."
She said Washington politicians in general have a "transactional" relationship with minorities. "It's transactional. It's not personal."

That’s why Putin’s Russia wants to knock down Western Liberal Democracy. The only power they can gain is relative to the other nations around it.

Corsi (a Roger Stone associate) has refused to sign a plea deal, over charges that he lied to the Special Counsel and/or the Grand Jury.

Well, in this case I doubt that the Democrat who replaces her can be much worse.

Who knows...Hyde-Smith didn't really make friends lately, and if the Democrats push for it, their voters will be most likely more motivated to actually go to the ballot. There is always the chance for an upset. After all, there is no telling that those who voted for the other republican will come out for her.
Exactly this, her "parting shots" were nothing but cowardly virtue signalling.
'Moderate' Republicans such as Flake or Love will happily get into bed with the fascists if it means that they get their tax cuts and pro-business policy, they're all style no substance.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThis is correct, at this point, the Republican Party is solidly Trumpian and thus true moderates are no longer affiliated. We just have fascists and their sycophants.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangAnd there is no tolerance for non-Trump supporters in many parts of the Republican electorate, see South Carolina's 1st district's primary this year
and notice how many Trump-critical Republicans either are no longer in office or are retiring.
The party is not entirely made up of hardcore Trumpists yet. What it does contain is a captive audience of Fox News viewers who have been conditioned to reject the Democrats as a reflex and blithely ignore the stench wafting out of their own party.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

The thing is that Putin may not have the resources to fight NATO but he has the will to wage wars of conquest. Also, how to use modern small units far more effectively than large armies thanks to advances in technology as well as changes in politics.
He just needs the rest of the world to go, "Yeah, it's wrong but do we really care enough about Estonia to go to war over it?"
