The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Same story as before

I guess she's going for the "If you can't beat em,join em" tactic,if populism attracts the voters and you badly want to win no matter what it can be exceedingly tempting

Pity she couldn't resist the temptation because the haters will now seize on this very quickly,I wonder how long before she has to walk back on her statement?

Not really. Centrists do this all the time; when racism is an issue they bend over or ignore it

When have people ever just ignored anything Hillary Clinton has said? That's not even to say this wasn't a genuinely stupid thing for her to say, but even if it weren't it would be turned into something else.

To be fair to the critics, it is a fairly inappropriate thing to say considering Europe's recent history with xenophobia.

Part of me is wondering if Clinton has decided either A) she's going to be hated no matter what she does so there's no point in trying to shift herself leftward, or B) since she's no longer interested in seeking any sort of political office, there's really no reason for her to shift leftward.

Or C) none of the above and I'm just talking out of my ass.

I guess she's going for the "If you can't beat em,join em" tactic,if populism attracts the voters and you badly want to win no matter what it can be exceedingly tempting

Who is she "joining" though? The right won't accept her, and this isn't really considered "populist" on the left.

I was thinking that d) might be that she thinks this will work as an election tactic in Europe against the far right.

Also, regarding The right won't accept her. Well, the US right won't accept her. The European one might.

What good would the European right accepting her do for her?

[up][up] So basically, Then Let Me Be Evil? That isn't so much a dig at Clinton as it is me genuinely thinking that's what it sounds like, at least the way you worded it.

It doesn't matter. As Steve Bannon just discovered, there are rules about foreigners interfering in our elections. She can voice her opinion, but she can't get involved in the politic of the EU because she is not an EU citizen.

But independent of this, I really have no idea where Hillary Clinton would even fit in European politics.

Many have always felt Hillary Clinton was far more conservative than Obama. It just was difficult to see in our time of overt corruption and evil in the Republicans to contrast.

Eh, I’d honestly rate them about the same. Their policy platforms are identical. Obama was hardly the most liberal Democrat around, not to say that I had any problem with that.

I get that. I was just arguing against Lord YAM's a point about people "bending over and ignoring" things like this, because that's not a thing that generally happens when stuff concerns Hillary Clinton.

Is it OK if I take out the "Mitch McConnell is the Big Bad of US politics" drum again? 'cause this time around it's the criminal justice reform bill that has fallen afoul of him.

I mean, it’s a crappy bill. If it was a good bill the republicans would have run away from it screaming. The phrase “bipartisan bill” in this Congress means a bill is milquetoast garbage 95% of the time.

Everyone is now trying to pull back their donations to Mississippi senator candidate Cindy Hyde-Smith, including the MLB (which is why this is an ESPN story).

The MLB kind of loses any sympathy points this would normally get considering they made their donation weeks AFTER she made those remarks. The same applies to the other retreating donors, if that's the case. And Hyde-Smith herself...well, an optimistic soul would hope this would be the straw that finally taught her the lesson, but I'm not that optimistic soul.

Oh, Hyde-Smith won't learn anything. The best case scenario is that it mobilizes votes against her so she loses, but even that I don't have high hopes for.

Something I forgot to say about Hillary last time: even if you pursue this morally disgusting path to appease the far-right, guess what, they're going to keep holding their nationalist marches, like Poland, and never be satisfied.

It sounds to me like Hillary's shaken by 2016. Trump's biggest campaign platform was that stupid wall, so I wonder if Hillary thinks fear of immigrants is what drove the overwhelming Republican victory in 2016. Her logic train sounds like,

"We tried to defend the immigrants and the Nazis rode that controversy into power, endangering everything we'd ever fought for. The voting public has spoken; they'd rather see civil rights and economic progress dumped in a can and burned than give one inch to immigrants. Don't make the same mistake we made."

It's a fear response. She's as freaked out by Trump's win as everyone else, and that's a problem because people look to her for leadership and guidance. So when she gives up on immigrants, it gives her followers permission to give up on them as well.

Hillary should probably just focus on being a grandmother. Her time has passed.
