The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So I think the only uncalled seat left is CA-21? (And the Mississippi Senate, but we're not just waiting for votes to counted there.)

[up] Yes. You must half the difference to get the number of votes which needed to be different for a different result. Like, if the difference is 20% to 80%, you don't need 60% more to win, you only need roughly 30% more.

1% more is practically nothing.

[up][up] Cal 21 is already decided, the Republican won narrowly there. What is left are two New York district (one will most likely go democratic, the other republican) and the Senate race (which will most like go to the republicans in the run-off.

If those last races go as expected, the Democrats lost -2 in the Senate but gained +39 in the house. That would be 234 vs 201 seats, which I think means that the Democrats aren't too dependent on the "Republican in everything but the name" Democrats.

I had a good laugh about this one:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/nov/21/steve-bannons-rightwing-europe-operation-undermined-by-election-laws

Not only is Steve Bannon learning that his approach to hijack the EU elections is simply illegal, even most of the far right parties within the EU doesn't want to be associated with him.

Well, if Fidesz says yes, then how could any illegality stop such a deal? Since, y'know, Fidesz is responsible for enforcing the laws against giving Fidesz help (and Hungary is a firmly managed democracy).

[up] There is something you need to understand regarding Orban and co: For all their Anti-EU rhetoric, they don't actually want to leave the EU. The likes of Le Penn have stopped talking about it because they know that it isn't popular with the voters, but Hungary and Poland benefitting greatly from the EU membership, consequently their strong-man rhetoric is mostly about being a headache and pushing for concessions and less about actually breaking up the EU.

That's something the Anglosphere doesn't really get.

It surprises me that the death of an American missionary isn't being exploited by Trump in someway, though I suppose Trump isn't really much of a zealot to care about one christian getting himself killed,Pence on the other would definitely use his death as some sort of rallying cry

Aye, there are good reasons why India enforces the Prime Directive around that island.

I don't think that this news is prominent enough to catch either Pence's or Trump's attention, and Pence is probably too busy plotting the takeover of the federal court system to notice anyway.

The Andaman (the tribe in question) have been in such complete isolation, that it is entirely plausible that they have had no contact with common illnesses such as measles and the flu. It is not out of the question that John Allen could have brought a disease that they would have no defense against.

They are a so-called uncontacted tribe, a group of people that is has had little or no contact to other groups of humans for a long time. For all we know they might not even know that there is a whole world outside of their island.

For the record, as a civil engineering student, I can say without a doubt that the whole "steel can't melt at that temperature" argument is a load of bull.

Metal doesn't need to reach melting point to lose its tensile or compressive strength and in the furnace conditions provoked by the attacks it definitely lost its capacity of holding the weight of the upper structure of the towers, not to mention that the collapse of one tower probably deteriorated the foundations of the other, hastening it's inevitable fall as a result.

Me and my friends studying engineering at college at one point ended up discussing the 9/11 attacks, my friends were pretty impressed how the WTC held up for so long after being hit by the plane.

Still, one of the dumbest conspiracies there are and somehow they even blame Obama for it.

Re: 9/11

Not a civil engineer but wouldn't the momentum of a fucking plane crashing into the towers destablize the supports enough to cause the tower to fall even without the whole "fire melting steel" thing?

[up]It would depend of the structure being hit.

The crash alone certainly compromised the structure but I can't tell how long it would take to fall if there weren't a fire.

Keep in mind the WTC was designed to take aircraft collisions into account, but the most common airliners at the time were the Boeing 727 and 737, which were smaller than the 767 that hit the towers.

Fire hazard however, is much more dangerous than the collision.

On the CA 21 House race, it was almost certainly called too early. There are apparently 15000 votes to count in Fresno; based off of previous trends, roughly 1/3 of those ballots involve CA 21, and Valadao leads Cox by less than 500 votes. (On election night, the gap was 4000 votes; the change has come from the partisan lean in early voting, which has affected many other CA House races as well.)
