The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Looks like the guy behind Surefire Intelligence tried to take credit for the Avenatti arrest. So if that's not just him trying to stay relevant this could all be fake.

Given we're seeing sexual crimes used by the GOP in literal frame up jobs now (see Mueller), I'm not as inclined to automatically make a snap judgement as I usually am. Especially as there are no details about the person or their relationship to him.

And I *HATE* that I have to be suspicious now.

I bet more indictments are coming.

The inner workings of the Mueller investigation are a total mess. They have found no collusion and have gone absolutely nuts. They are screaming and shouting at people, horribly threatening them to come up with the answers they want. They are a disgrace to our Nation and don’t.......care how many lives the ruin. These are Angry People, including the highly conflicted Bob Mueller, who worked for Obama for 8 years. They won’t even look at all of the bad acts and crimes on the other side. A TOTAL WITCH HUNT LIKE NO OTHER IN AMERICAN HISTORY!

Or it could just be projection, but don’t be suprised I’d we do.

The White House is running very smoothly and the results for our Nation are obviously very good. We are the envy of the world. But anytime I even think about making changes, the FAKE NEWS MEDIA goes crazy, always seeking to make us look as bad as possible! Very dishonest!

Universities will someday study what highly conflicted (and NOT Senate approved) Bob Mueller and his gang of Democrat thugs have done to destroy people. Why is he protecting Crooked Hillary, Comey, Mc Cabe, Lisa Page & her lover, Peter S, and all of his friends on the other side?

Comey might not be the best guy around, but unless he's done something actively illegal, I don't see why he should be in the slammer.

I get that people are mad that he potentially caused Trump to win, but remember that even he figured that Hillary was going to come out on top. It was his way of covering his ass in case someone asked him about the investigation later.

He was probably as nonplussed as anyone else when the GOP took power.

And frankly, Trump coming to power was the perfect wake-up call to a lot of people that there's a long way to go for the United States to live up to it's ideals. I think that's not a bad thing - it's got people motivated and on the clock.

Comey using his positon to influence the election was a direct violation of the Hatch Act, at a minimum he should be stripped of his pension and other benefits associated with an office that he abused to help his party win an election.

Uh. I think the kids with lifelong trauma from being torn from their parents, the murdered Jews from the Pittsburgh synagogue, and the many, many other people directly harmed by Trump’s vicious policies would disagree. Like, I don’t think you meant it that way but that’s a horrifically callous and privileged statement.

You can't blame anyone for looking for a silver lining in all this. It could be worse. Trump could actually be competent. If he were like Erdogan or Putin, the US would truly be in deep trouble.

Trying to claim Trump's win was a good thing because it's a wake up call is privileged accelerationist bullshit. It ignores the fact that Trump's win and his administration has caused real lasting damage. People's lives have been ruined. Peoples' lives have ended.

Trump's win was not a good thing.

Ya, Trump being a fool is probably a good thing as it tempers his bad-ness. There be a reason why many people say that Trump isn't any more evil/racist/what-have-you than the rest of the (especially: Congressional) Republicans, he just doesn't put any effort in fig leafing it or at competently carrying out.

Trump has done and will do a lot of damage to the US. But I admit, I have hope that it will come out better this time around than back when Bush did it, because for once people started to pay attention.

The US in general needs to take a hard look at itself, and not just because of Trump and not just since 2016.

I know it could be worse. That doesn't mean it's not incredibly awful as it is.

Trump's malignant narcissism, sheer incompetence, and cruelty has done a lot to poison the Republican brand. Without the chaos of his presidency, I doubt the Democrats would be resurgent or, indeed, even that popular. If a different Republican had won, we would have had atrocities at the border, a strained reputation abroad, and tax cuts for the rich, but it would have been met with indifference or even approval, and if Hillary won, there would have been a groundswell of conservative opposition translating to an unassailable conservative majority. Trump made everyone disgusted and terrified like no one else could, and most people in America only start doing the right thing when you scare the shit out of them. His presidency's causing chaos, but it's creative destruction, without which any progressive accomplishment would have been either lukewarm or downright impossible.

Every time Trump whines about how the Mueller Investigation isn't looking at Democrats, I feel like he just got back from whining to the Justice Department about it and is using Twitter to vent his impotent frustration.

  • Trump: No, listen, I know I was just in here last week, but I just heard on InfoWars that Hillary—
  • Rosenstein: Mr. President, what does any of this have to do with Russian collusion in 2016?
  • Trump: Hear me out. Have you heard about this Uranium One thing? Big. Problem. Hillary was buying nuclear weapons from Russia by disguising them as child prostitutes or something. You should look into it.
  • Rosenstein: Uh-huh. You know what, I'll get back to you.
  • Trump: No, really. The very best people have all said it's true.
  • Rosenstein: Have a good day, Mr. President.
