Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Please don’t call them that - it’s frankly rather ableist. One shouldn’t equate mental illness with having awful beliefs.
Oh God! Natural light!![]()
Same. Seeing as I've got autism/aspergers, I'm also 'mentally defective'. Techinally speaking. Of course, God knows I don't think of myself as such, and I'm sure most people who have some sort of disability or another feel the same way. So it's probally not a good idea to call anyone that if you can help it. Nevermind labeling it as an excuse for bigotry.

Unless someone classifies "being an self-centred, sociopathic asshole" as a Mental Illness, it's kind of silly to say violence/racism/bigotry/extremism/x-phobia is called by mentally-ill individuals.

I hold the secrets of the machine.![]()

Well, now you know. (^_^;; Just...please don't do it again. Technically, I'd fit in that framework as well, and I'd like to think I'm not that horrible a person.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -Fighteer@LSBK: It is a mental illness, yes. It actually does impair someone's general ability to function and does cause sociopaths suffering in general. Keep in mind that sociopaths however, are not quite Always Chaotic Evil contrary to how they're universally portrayed. Sociopaths tend to be a bit more like Haruhi Suzamiya than the Joker IIRC.
It is worth noting though that sociopathy, antipersonality disorder, etc are usually not considered legal defenses, largely because of the above.
Leviticus 19:34Nowadays it's called (wikipedia link) Antisocial personality disorder
. Most present day mental health professionals would probably refrain from calling people "sociopath" or "psychopath" anymore.

Disgusted, but not surprised![]()
Things like this are partially why I post here, in the end. If you're right, huzzah! If you're wrong, you learn something.
Of course, that doesn't apply to me, as I am always right. Even when I'm wrong, I'm right.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerOn the Republican Jesus video, some of the comments are gold:
But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God... Lest they be the children of migrant invaders, for those must be separated from their parents and delivered to detention centers before being shipped back to whatever shithole country they came from: for of such is the kingdom of Trump.
For God so loved the world that He privatized it. - John 3:16, Great Again Version
For I was hungry and you cut food stamps, I was a stranger and you deported me, for I was sick and you denied me healthcare.
And GOP Jesus said When criticized or accused, deflect the blame onto your enemies. When that doesn’t work, create an international crisis and demonize foreigners.
Matthew 22:21 Don't render unto Caesar the things which belongs to Caesar. Instead put your money into an off shore account somewhere in the Cayman Islands so greedy old Caesar can't touch what belongs to you.
Another Democrat victory - now that's worth knowing.
I think this song is oddly fitting, given the present situation globally.
So as the new wave of Democrats are coming in, can someone tell me why some news outlets are currently (like this one
) trying to spin Ocasio-Cortex as "leading climate change protests at Pelosi's office"?
![]()
I have no idea where the spin is there, she is organizing a climate change protest outside Pelosi's office and news media are reporting on it. Let's not demonize for reporting the truth please.
By the way, I fully support her in doing so, given how the issue seems to have been put on hold for the last 10 years and leading politicians seem to only want to take action if it's reaching the backdoor of their beach house.
Life is unfair...

Edit: This is a hell of a pagetopper.
Edit 2:
I hate to be the annoying person who goes around telling people things are offensive, but maybe we shouldn't imply that mental illness is causing racism.
