Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Someone a while back was wondering about the Arizona automatic recount rules, and for some reason I only just now decided to look them up. Here's what the margins are for an automatic vote recount in Arizona:
Less than or equal to the lesser of the following: (1) 0.1% of votes cast for both candidates; (2) 200 votes if more than 25,000 votes were cast; or (3) 50 votes if 25,000 or fewer votes were cast.
Apparently there's protesters chanting "Lock her up" in reference to the Election Council (or something or other) Chair in Broward county, in an attempt to intimidate them into stopping the ballot count. Given that this appears to be a black woman in the position, this looks even worse than it usually does when people are chanting that.
Trumps favourite tactic seems to be to accuse Reporters of Colour of racism if they dare to ask anything about his racist and/or nationalist actions.
Anyway, North Carolina 9th stayed Republican. Too bad, this was a really close race. Which is telling if you ask me. I mean, we are talking about North Carolina.
Because obvs he's not racist, so if a Poc says he might they must think so because he's White and thus they are racist to him.
As for NATO, Trump probably sees it as a Service-Client relationship where the rest of the World has to pay the US for Protection (and we all know how he treats people in those relationships with him).
This going to 'another provider' is an 'Insult'.
I.e. not 'raise your defense spending' and more 'buy our stuff'.
It's pretty Mafia

I was talking about the whole finance question. Nobody in NATO actually pays something to the US. The most they get is free use of bases in Europe (cough Germany cough), but that's pretty much is it. "Nato Spending" covers what those countries poor in their own military. Hence the european army being exactly what the US originally demanded.
8 new scientists and doctors elected to the Senate, the majority of them Democrats
Does anyone know why the counting in Broward county takes so long? I mean, yes, they had a pretty high voter turnout, but so have a lot of the other countries, and Broward is the only one which still hasn't reported Mail, early voting and provisional ballots. Only Palm Beach lags nearly as far behind.

Yeah that.
Still fairly amusing how the Democrats are over represented in the fields of science and technology, while it is the conservatives who spout how they are the party of reason over feelings.
A very good thing though, these representatives are way less likely to pass laws ignoring global warming or actively denying basic science or approve shit like rape being a pre-existing condition
