Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

One bit of bullshit shows up in this thread a lot and I found out differently, ironically, because of this thread. Specifically, poor people aren't any more racist than rich people and the assumption about economics playing a role in things like Trump's election or anti-immigrant feelings are stereotypes not based in reality.
The poor whites of America voted hard....for Hillary.
Trump was elected by rich and middle class white Americans. People also forget that the bulk of America's rural population went red but it was only in a few states that was by a great majority and very often was through fraud. The poor in those states were, again, voting for Democrats.
Racism is not a class thing. That's a stereotype that classicist people have tried to forward.

The explanation for some of the machines is that they are really friggin old. Like I said before, some of them are as old as some first time voters.
Now if all these machines switched Democratic votes to Republican votes only...

Disgusted, but not surprised>On Sanders and race relations
No Name had it best when suggesting that your head meets the desk.
>Is he an American's Hate Tingle situation here?
...Kind of? I remember the second half of 2016 and early 2017 mentioning Sanders name was enough to kick off a flame war and a lot of hate, but its died down to just a general dislike. It helps that the consensus outside Tv Tropes also tended to move in the direction of "You know, maybe he's not infallible, and actually has problems too, especially on racial and gender issues."
>Capital P Progressives
If there's one decent thing Sanders has done, he's got more progressives running as Democrats in primaries instead of trying for third party bids. Third Parties tends to be more useful only with Fusion Voting or Ranked Choice (or special cases like Vermont). Those voting third parties tend to not be the people who would vote Democratic in the first place. Especially the Libertarians, who from their platform would likely tend Republican instead.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -Fighteer> The explanation for some of the machines is that they are really friggin old. Like I said before, some of them are as old as some first time voters.
Sounds like a convenient cover story "Uh huh these machines are reallly old thats what's been changing your votes,no siree there's been no tempering, must have developed a mind of own..who'd thought they'd vote Republican"
The fact they outdated and still used says a lot,it says to me they're not interested in repairing them if it helps the democrats lose
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverSanders is disliked by many in this thread, it's not as bad as it was as people have generally stopped blaming him for Trump's win and the more unreasonable people who agreed with Sanders either left the thread or got banned.
Oh and add me to the eye-roll group for Sanders saying that having racist feelings dosn't make a person racist. He couldn't just say that it's great to see white people who might feel uncomfortable pushing past that and voting for black candidates, he had to throw in the denial of racism.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI'm so happy that Sinema (D) is on top again. I've been keeping track of the results, and she was consistently between 1% and 0.5% below Mc Sally from 1.3 million total votes all the way to 1.75 million total votes, which was like all of yesterday and most of earlier today. Currently, it's at 1.9 million total votes, and that seems to have been enough to put her over the edge. The gap is still only 0.5%, though, so it's still anyone's game.
The thing to do it seems to be the Maricopa district, which leans Democrat more than I thought they did. Yesterday, they were wavering between 0.3% and 1% towards Sinema, but now they lean her way a full 2.5%.

A much less arguable term would be "former republics of the Soviet Union".

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.

Sanders just cannot stop giving me reasons not to vote for him in the 2020 primaries, can he.
