Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

As usual, there is so much stuff at once happening that a video which was obviously doctored is the smaller matter.

The Tenure is just exhausting. Hence me hoping that at least one of the big races will end in a win after all.

Question: When does this recount rule apply? Is it state specific? Because of the races left, there are a lot which might be within the 0.5% margin.

Edit: Also, what do you think about Broward County? How is it possible that there are so many less votes cast for the Senate compared to the governor seat? I mean, if you have one ballot in front of you, wouldn't you vote for both? Even if some people didn't, there shouldn't be such a high difference.

[up]It likely varies by state, if they even have recount procedures at all.

In Florida it's 0.5% for a mixed manual recount and re-tabulation, if after that the results are still within 0.25% then a fully manual recount takes place.

Blue wave in this Boise legislative district leaves losers grumbling at Ada County GOP

https://www.idahostatesman.com/news/politics-government/election/article221316170.html

A bit of local level news: A state legislatural district flipped here in Idaho close to where I am. Both its state House seats flipped and a state Senate seat may to, depending on recount results.

Seems to be a direct result of the higher Democratic turnout in general and the Medicaid expansion ballot measure in particular, if I'm reading correctly.

The fact we’re shrugging at blatantly doctored video being used by the White House to defame a journalist and yank his credentials is.... fucked up. The window of what’s “normal” is moving so fast it's obscene.
I'm not shrugging it off. It's a blatant abuse of power and the video doctoring is 1984 level tactics.

I said this before, but maybe if Trump didn't want to be asked tough questions he shouldn't have been president.

Bernie Sanders: White people who are uncomfortable voting for a black politician are not necessarily racist

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Wednesday said many white people were “uncomfortable” voting for black candidates in the midterm elections.

Sanders specifically referenced the close gubernatorial races of Democrats Andrew Gillum in Florida and Stacey Abrams in Georgia, who both trailed in their races in the most recent vote counts as of Thursday morning.

ADVERTISEMENT “I think, you know, there are a lot of white folks out there who are not necessarily racist who felt uncomfortable for the first time in their lives about whether or not they wanted to vote for an African-American,” Sanders told the Daily Beast. “I think next time around, by the way, it would be much easier for them to do that.”

A Sanders spokesman weighed in on the comments on Twitter on Thursday, saying that the senator was pointing out that Gillum's and Abrams's Republican opponents ran “explicitly racist campaigns.”

Except that's the very concept of racism.

No one's shrugging it off, it's just Same Shit Different Day and thus we're numb to it.

I'm sure that all of us view it as terrible.

This is why I don't support or particularly like Sanders, because outside of his specific hobby horse of income inequality (which absolutely matters) he is completely indifferent to more or less everything else.

No-one that much of a single issue politician should be President.

Sanders is a bit of a well intentioned idiot on race and women’s issues. And he’s willing to throw both under the bus to focus on economics. Asshole.

I’m posting this link again, if anyone has a spare 20 minutes, this document has ways you can help Stacey Abrams. I’m literally not allowed to and it’s killing me.

@Fourthspartan 56: A lot of socialists fall into the trap of what I call "Magic Bullet Thinking". This is when a person contextualizes all problems as revolving around a single issue, and saying that if they fix the single issue then the other problems will fall apart. In the case of socialists, a lot of the more vocal ones tend to argue that sexism, racism, etc, are actually symptoms of wealth inequality, which is plainly ridiculous.

Having said that they aren't unique in this regard. This fallacy is also common in libertarians, for example.

I'm finding Bernie annoying now. In the 2016 primaries, I didn't understand why some African-American liberals didn't embrace him, but oh, am I understanding it recently.

I'm not sure whether I'd consider Bernie well-intentioned.

It rather comes across to me like he really wants to win the votes of racists/sexists and positions himself as a better alternative to people who dislike the Democratic Party's pro-feminist and civil rights views. And "coincidentally", his rivals for the 2020 Democratic Party slot are generally women and/or POC.

Edit- And to be somewhat more charitable, I think it also has to do with this underlying idea of "Marxism" (for lack of a better word) in which evil capitalists manipulate the poor to make them act against their interests. It has a fair amount of truth to it, but the problem is that it leads to a viewpoint where the poor are always "innocent", which is even more questionable when it overlaps with an idea of the working class, especially if they are white as representing the best of America.

Put together, this is why Sanders can correctly characterize Republican bigwigs as leading a racist campaign against Gillum and Abrams (since they are evil capitalists), but can't admit to "salt of the earth" voters being racist.

Bernie Sanders represents one of the main problems with the capital P "Progressive" crowd. They don't want Democrats to improve or move further than the left; they want to think they're better than Democrats. That's why you occasionally see candidates running in local elections that poo-poo the Democratic Party, saying how they're too centrist or a do-nothing party or whatever... and instead of running on the Democratic ticket and making sure to win, which would move the Party that much further left... they run independent. Or they run Dem the first time, lose, and run as an independent next time, ala Bernie himself.

Is Bernie Sanders considered an Americans Hate Tingle sort of subject here? Everywhere else I go he's treated as a Sacred Cow.

Although the claims from here against him seem sincere and genuine. I personally think he's too optimistic about bad things, such as Russia and racism, but otherwise I'm indifferent to him.

@Physical Stamina- That tangentially reminded me of this analysis I read about Gillum (I think from Jamelle Bouie) about how his take on Progressivism was a better path because it integrated race and class instead of trying to separate them, helped by the fact that he's coming from an African American political tradition.

I think the way the article put it was something to the effect that instead of the approach of advocating for social welfare policies by trying to trick white people that only they would benefit, his approach was instead that because African Americans would benefit, everyone else would as well. You can see it in terms of how the advocacy for felon re-enfranchisement was open about how African Americans would benefit but made the point that it would also/primarily benefit white people.

It's kind of the "popular on the internet, but not a good indicator of IRL popularity" sort of thing. A big reason why Sanders had so much hype behind him in the primaries was his fiery oratory was something that was a lot more appealing to younger people in comparison to Hillary, who was also the victim of a smear campaign that's lasted so long people don't realize they bought into it. Of course it didn't matter that much in the end and wasn't a good indicator of how things eventually went.

Well, I stumbled over a pretty spot on rant about Bernie and his crowd

https://mediatedlife.wordpress.com/2018/11/08/this-asshat-again-great/

Says it better than I ever could. That is exactly the impression I got from watching US politics, too.

The problem is, that the Democratic party is so divided, but I certainly know which part of it I agree with. And that's not the ones which are way too deep in the pocket of big donors and also not the ones on the far left, which are painting everyone who doesn't 100% agree with them with one brush, but the ones between those two camps. They are the ones the US needs.

@Physical Stamina: The progressives in this election were basically all running under the democratic party banner, like Ocasio Cortez, unless you think of the usual independents who barely get two percent of the vote as a significant force.

@Protagonist: Few people think alleviating economic inequality will "fix" social issues. I do strongly believe it helps though, even if it's for the wrong reasons, you know, like make conservatives stop thinking of all latino people as poor and only in the country for welfare.

I do strongly believe it helps though, even if it's for the wrong reasons, you know, like make conservatives stop thinking of all latino people as poor and only in the country for the welfare or other such things.

Except it doesn't, Conservatives are motivated by fears of a more racially diverse country and power slipping from the hands of straight white males.

Helping the nation will not make their less racist because their racism fundamentally is not caused by economic anxiety, it may intertwine with it but reducing economic inequality will not solve that problem. Hence why Sanders and similar Class first leftists will not actually be able to address racism or other prejudices.
