Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Georgia, right. My bad.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Exactly. As it is, getting him to step down from his potentially-obsolete role now, after all votes have already been cast, but then continuing to decide the election with his anti-democratic measures still in place makes his forced resignation a token gesture.
And is, unfortunately, probably exactly what's going to happen. His resignation is a slap on the wrist if they don't go to runoff.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Two things are happening in the Senate:
- In Arizona the GOP is trying to limit some mail-in ballots through a lawsuit
. Their candidate is currently up by a bit less than 20000 votes but there over 30 times that many mail in ballots to count. They are probably afraid these ballots will tip the election against them.
- In Florida weird things have happened in Broward County - much fewer votes for Nelson than for Gillum. Hence Nate Silver considers the recount now a "lean Republican" rather than "likely Republican"
Of course, they still both are "lean Republican" and even if Democrats win both it's a net 1 seat loss this year (although getting a statewide elected official in form of a senator might help the Democrats in Arizona over the long term in terms of organization)
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanConsidering how close Gillum's election was going from "likely Republican" to "lean Republican" is really big.
I hope Abrams has a runoff and Gillum wins, frankly, if both of those things happen then I would consider 2018 a clear victory.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThat was just really poor wording on my part.
I meant that I hope Abrams has a runoff and Gillum wins.
I assure you that I know the gender of my state's gubernatorial candidate
That's probably because it isn't really relevant in the grand scheme of things. The White House saying untrue things isn't exactly a surprise and this doesn't even concern a policy question.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe fact we’re shrugging at blatantly doctored video being used by the White House to defame a journalist and yank his credentials is.... fucked up. The window of what’s “normal” is moving so fast it's obscene.
On a more positive note- check out this document
for a list of ways to help Stacey Abrams. There’s a lot of good options. I’m so mad I can’t campaign right now, I’d be texting voters to check their ballots were tallied right now if I could

Finally got the 18th Democrat called for the Maine State Senate: with the Maine House and Governorship going Democrat, that is another state level trifecta. District 2 is 95% reporting in and neither candidate is much above 46%, so it seems almost certain that ranked choice voting will determine the seat; as per usual, the GOP candidate has already stated he will not accept the ranked choice result (if he loses).

Er, Kemp is in Georgia not Florida.
