Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations

before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, the Canadians also produced Commander Shepard and Leo Major, so they can't be all that bad.
Some people have commented on the turnout, though.
A handy list of elections not yet called
, Arizona is IMO the most interesting one.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSomeone was wondering why the Guardian currently shows a net gain of two for the Republicans in the Senate...that's because three races aren't decided yet, and they will all most likely go to Republicans. Once they are decided, the number will look differently.
The three races are Mississippi, where the Republican candidate stayed under 50%, so there will be a run-off race, Florida, where the result is currently in the 0.4% range, so there will be a recount, and Arizona (where I guess there is still a chance that the Democrats will edge a win) ist still counting and that can apparently take another week or so because there are still a lot of mail in ballots.
Same with the House...the Gouverneur races are currently all decided, with the notable exception of Georgia. The Guardian currently lists the net-gain for Democrats for the House at +28, but the story isn't quite over yet. There are still Georgia 6th and 7th to decide (in one the Democratic Candidate has a comfortable 1% lead, in the other the Republican Candidate is only 0.4% ahead), you have a similar situation in Texas 23d, New York 27th hasn't fully reported yet (the republican is in the lead though), and there are still 10 toss-up races left to decide. Looks good for Carley Rouda and Katie Hill in California, Anthony Brindisi in New York, Andy Kim in New Jersey and Ben Adams in Utah, but there they are still far, far away from counting all the votes.

Well, Trump can't STAND the CNN, and especially not said journalist, because he kept asking very uncomfortable questions. Last press conference, the situation got so much out of hand that a female aid tried to wrestle away the microphone from said journalist in order to shut him up. And now the White House is claiming that she was touched/molested by said journalist banned him from attending more press briefings. That is naturally BS. She is clearly touching him, not the other way around, if anything he is trying to pull away from her.
A really depressing and eye opening statistic from the New York Times regarding the senate races.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/06/us/elections/results-senate-elections.html
Take a look at the actual voter count. The Democrats got more than 12 Million votes more than the Republicans, and yet they lost in the end.
I don't think this has been mentioned, but Democrats have seized Georgia's 6th district, it of special election fame. OTOH getting a little worried about that Arizona senate seat.

Oh really when?Really looking forward to Maine's 2020 Senate election and what it means for Collins.
Collins is normally a shoo-in, but here's the thing, one of the unresolved House races is Maine's 2nd district
. Jared Golden, a young Democrat (albeit one with ties to Collins, as he worked for her) doing that well in the 2nd district (Northern Maine) is shocking. The 1st District will go Democrat; it's Northern Massachusetts. But the 2nd District going blue, or even approaching it is insane.
Now, with the House controlled by the Dems, and the Republicans picking up more seats, this means that Collins is less relevant on the national stage since she's no longer that crucial swing vote. This could either mean she'll A: Swing left knowing the state as a whole is bluer than she'd like and that her vote is no longer relevant or B: Swing right in fear of a primary challenge.
It'll be interesting.

I think we might be looking at the beginning of the collapse of the American system because we've entered a point where the country will be increasingly at the mercy of it's least democratic parts. There is a very, very good chance that we're looking at at least another decade of Republican control of the Senate, and we're also likely looking at a scenario where Alito is the swing vote on the Supreme Court. And even the more democratic institutions have shown to be heavily slanted in favor of minority rule.

Someone mentioned Agnew; he resigned after being investigated for corruption, tax fraud, and accepting bribes. The tldr from Wikipedia:
So, 12 people people were killed in a mass shooting in a California bar. The attacker took his own life as police closed in.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. At this point I can only hope that the democrats on the supreme court will live forever and the Republicans will have all an early heart attack or give up their seat for other reasons. And I know this sounds terrible, but the situation is getting desperate.
Georgia's 6th has been called and Democrat Lucy Mc Bath is the winner. (Yes, I know, this doesn't really make up for the bad news Trump dished out since election night, but I take every win I can get at this point). Looking at the races left, the Democrats got more than 30 additional seats, which is easily on the upper level of the predictions.

So, Brian Kemp is resigning
as Georgia Secretary of State due to a lawsuit.
And because he's expecting to win a different post (Governor), no doubt. A "non-resignation" resignation.
By the by, the latest mass shooting is discussed here
seeing as this isn't a general news thread.
