The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In all seriousness though, Ted Cruz has the personality and appeal and brainpower of a dead rotting fish. And I'd rather be in the same room with the fish.

The only reason Ted Cruz is still a senator despite being...Ted Cruz is that R next to his name on the ballot.

And Beto vastly overperformed from what I've heard. Even though he lost, I take it as a good sign that he was so close to victory.

So, uh, holy shit, the voter suppression is Florida was way worse than initially reported.

One reporter found 57 people today who didn’t even receive their absentee ballots. Tens of thousands of ballots that were mailed in were “rejected” and voting rights groups are trying to get them perfected by tomorrow at 5pm.

Wait, does that mean Florida could still flip?

It's been fun.

Well it wouldn't be the first time Florida had this sort of screwy crap happen. Man oh man did Gillium concede too quickly. I don't think it is legally binding, though.

Florida's a place where a lot of old white people go to live out their retirement days.

It's also a place where a lot of people fled to from Cuba, and thus have a dim view of anything remotely associated with leftwing stuff.

Yeah Florida isn’t over yet, Nelson has refused to concede and they’ve got postal votes to count.

[up][up],[up][up][up] Pretty much, yeah. It seems to be concentrated mostly in the North. I'm lucky enough to live in a blue county (which would be Miami-Dade).

Isn't that the thing with Florida: the further north you go, the deeper in the South you are.

That's true with New York State and Maine, too. New Hampshire and Vermont are also white as driven snow and tend to be pretty conservative as a result, from what little I've picked up on. Though maybe only fiscally?

I always thought that Vermont was pretty weird for being both very white and rural, while also pretty liberal.

Have any major news sites picked up on the Florida voter suppression? It wouldn't surprise me if it did happen, I hope we have more on this then just a few twitter threads.

Please do not insult Fishes or Lizards. Fish are awesome when cooked properly. Lizards are awesome too - obviously not when cooked.

This is also a history question, but can you remind me what exactly what was the scandal that would lead to Spiro Agnew's resignation, and when it happened? Has it been determined if he was really guilty of such?

On a more modern note, I suspect that much like Dan Quayle, Mike Pence is Trump's defense against assassination attempts and impeachment.

Ted Cruz is a mime but in reverse. While most mimes are normal people who pretend to be uncanny valley horrors, Ted Cruz is an uncanny valley horror who pretends to be a normal person — and fails.

It's not surprising that he's from Alberta. Canada is the only place on Earth that could spawn something as twisted as a reverse-mime. It must be all the poutine and maple syrup.
