Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Associated Press has not called the contest.
Ryan Mahoney, a top Kemp campaign adviser, told reporters in a conference call that the numbers show Abrams can’t win and a runoff won’t happen — but stopped short of declaring victory until pressed by an Associated Press reporter. Only then did Mahoney say Kemp is certain of victory and preparing to take office in January.
“We are declaring victory,” Mahoney said. Another campaign official, Austin Chambers, added: “The message here is pretty simple: This election is over, and the results are clear.”
Kemp was not on the call.
The move comes after a tense standoff that leaves open the possibility of litigation as Abrams’ campaign has spent the day pushing for the continued counting of absentee, mail-in and provisional ballots and renewing its concerns that Kemp remains the chief elections officer supervising his own election, a race already marked by disputes over the voting process.
With reported votes exceeding 3.9 million — almost 95 percent of Georgia’s 2016 presidential turnout — Kemp has just more than 50 percent.
“We are leaving all of our options on the table,” including litigation, Abrams’ campaign manager Lauren Groh-Wargo said. She estimated Wednesday that about 15,000 votes separate Kemp from a runoff. She says at least that many outstanding absentee and mail-in ballots remained to be counted.
Kemp’s spokeswoman in the secretary of state’s office, Candice Broce, said that by Wednesday afternoon the number of uncounted absentee and mail-in ballots was less than 2,000 — with her boss still above the 50 percent threshold.
Broce said about 22,000 provisional ballots have yet to be processed, according to a canvass of county officials across the state. Mahoney asserted that those numbers make it impossible for Abrams to pick up enough votes to deny Kemp an outright victory.
In 2016, with a slightly larger electorate, there were 16,739 provisional ballots. Of those, 7,592 were counted. State and campaign officials said they expected a much higher proportion to be counted this year.
Kemp’s office has not released a county-by-county breakdown of provisional ballots, but Abrams’ campaign said they believe they are concentrated in metro Atlanta counties where Abrams won a large share of the vote.
Nixon actually did negotiate incredibly important world-changing acts for a lot of people.
China, obviously.
But he also eliminated all (Federal) persecution of Native Americans.
Too bad so much of his administration was otherwise creepy.

Look, Nixon was nowhere near as bad as Trump. I'm not a Nixon fan, but at least the guy actually knew the laws and conventions he bent or broke.
And, he also understood how, you know, to do the job. Granted, rather crookedly. Yet, he worked his socks off making workable legislation that's stood the test of time.
Well, until Trump started ripping a lot of it up.

Nixon's biggest issues being his refusal to reign in the FBI (or inability) his and willingness to work with racists as long as they voted for him. Oh and the fact he totally was willing to break the law to win an election despite the fact being a conservative white man in the sixties who wasn't a segregationist would have required him to eat a live baby on stage to lose.
Oh and that whole Vietnam thing.
I think of him as one of the big examples of You Could Have Used Your Powers for Good! and maybe even a greek kind of tragedy in that he had great potential as a statesman but was broken by personal weaknesses.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Tricky Dick has long held that position because, again, the man did amazing things to counter his evil ones.
And vice versa.
I think he's the closest thing the United States has to Stannis Baratheon in its history.

Trying to find humour in a grim situation is a coping strategy.
And, comparing a living narcissist to a fictional one is fine, if it gets people to better see what one looks like in the RL wild.

I'm a fan of Ice and Fire and I just think they're incomparable to modern political leaders, they're based off completely different systems of ruling after all,one is elected by the people and is considered democratic but has flaws, the other is a fantasy king who had people burned alive and ruled like a tyrant
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverAlthough, I think I remember it used to be the practice for everyone in the state to for individual representatives, even in the districts they didn't live in. I don't know when that got scrapped though, but obviously it was super messed up.

There is the most important reason; he wouldn't help Trump obstruct justice.
The corruption on display is just so blatant it's baffling the amount of people support Trump.
