Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Rohrabacher looks like he lost to the the Democratic candidate, Harley Rouda!
He’s the one the NYT labeled as “Putin’s favorite Congressman”, and this election just keeps looking better and better!

I can't tell if this is a real tweet
◊ - it's not dated and a quick scan of his Twitter suggests it's not recent if it is - but either way, it is definitely accurate.
This is pretty cool: Ilhan Omar again makes history, becoming 1st Somali-American elected to U.S. House
And THANK GOD the Minnesota governorship stayed blue. Also happy that Jason Lewis (R) is out and Angie Craig (D) is in. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Jason.

Just saw about Rohrbacher. What a lovely thing to wake up to.
The CT governor's race that I was worried about has turned around, the Democrat Ned Lamont is now up 10K votes and from what I hear most votes left to be counted are in urban areas that should favor him. So CT has survived a massive scare/an attempt to blow its own foot off, but there are big, big problems in that state that the Dems need to sort out and get in order pronto, because between massive income inequality/standard of living difference, a massive fiscal problem, and a stark rural/urban divide, the state is quietly a basket case and has been increasingly shifting towards becoming a purple state in state politics rather than blue.
Democrats need to get it sorted out and fast, because they're not going to be able to paper over problems much longer, which has been their approach for a long time.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |This seemed like a good summation of last night.

Here’s a longer summary
of why last night was a massive success.
This might help, too:
Having this laid out in a nice little graphic makes the losses hurt less, because once you look at it objectively, the Democrats managed to hold onto what they were expected to hold onto and conquered a lot in areas in which they usually have no business to be. And all this with the deck stacked against them.
The democrats have 64 subpoenas lined up.
They're going to be looking into the russian interference/connection to the Trump campaign, including, among another things, the allegations that Trump properties were used to launder money by russian oligarchs.
We've already said this but the GOP's legislative agenda is also dead.
A small but pleasant surprise from Mississippi: the senate election there is heading for a runoff. It's certain to end up in Republican favor, but at least Democrats could push things that far. Also, there were two Republican candidates, one of them being Chris McDaniel, a completely loathsome neo-Confederate and White Supremacist with all the tact and morality of an rabid wolverine. McDaniel will not be the Republican in the runoff, as enough of his party found him too loathsome and/or unhinged to vote for. So that's a tiny victory for human decency.
Another prominent neo-Confederate, Corey Stewart in Virginia, (another Bannon/Breitbart guy, IIRC) was expected to lose to Tim Kaine, but he got a pretty thorough thumping. (Kaine up by over half a million votes, 57 to 41 percent.) Combined with his loss in the Governor's race in 2016, it looks like Virginia has completely turned its back on Stewart, and likely his brand of politics is dead in the state, much to the dismay of a lot of White Supremacists and "The South shall rise again!" types.
And Georgia's 6th district is looking like it may have an upset on its hand, as Democrat Lucy McBath appears ready to just slide by Karen Handel by about 2,000 votes, 50.3% to 49.7%.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |This is going to sound strange, but I'm actually glad Trump is gloating and treating this as a win for himself. I'd rather have that (since he's wrong anyway) than "The Democrats won more than I think they should have. This can only mean VOTER FRAUD! I am launching a huge investigation into this, at tax payer's expense, of course."

48 was held by a pro-russia trump suck-up, and apparently it was held by the GOP for three decades.
To remind everyone everyone exactly how bad Rohrabacher was about his blatant pro-Russia BS, even other Republicans despised him for openly being a Putin toady.
“There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” Mc Carthy (R-Calif.) said, according to a recording of the June 15, 2016, exchange, which was listened to and verified by The Washington Post. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is a Californian Republican known in Congress as a fervent defender of Putin and Russia
Also, another Californian Trump suckup and defender, Darrell Issa, decided not to run for reelection. His district looks likely to turn blue for the first time in 20 years, although so far just 2/3 of the votes have been counted.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |Trump is physically incapable of acknowledging failure. He could have been clapped in irons and exiled to Timbuktu today, and he'd have found a way to call that a win.
Suddenly I'm... still rotating Fallen London in my mind even though I've stopped actively playing it.

Not great, but keep in mind that the Libertarian Party generally hurts the GOP more than the Green Party hurts the Democrats.
