The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]Hooooo boy. Not really? Kemp has been BRAZEN. Federal judges have been slapping him down all month/last month. He purged 320,000 voters RIGHT BEFORE the election! Predominantly black voters!

He's also the one in charge of the voter rolls in an election he was participating in.

[up][up]Yeah, I know about Kemp, but I was speaking much more generally in all three states and about exact details.

Either way it's not as though anything short of the Federal government could actually dole out consequences for state governments outright stealing elections. And even then the Supreme Court might just stop them for 10th Amendment reasons.

re: The Minnesota State Legislature flip

Do we have any sources on how state legislatures are doing? If there have been any flips there? Or are there too many to easily track in that case?

Do all three of those states really have unusually high amounts of voter suppression/ outright cheating compared to other states? It would be interesting to find out, but in the case of outright cheating we probably will never know without a Federal investigation or something.

Texas had reports of machines changing votes. Georgia had Kemp as both a candidate and supervising the election he was running in and as Wisewillow said, purged voters from the registration right before the election. Florida, I'm not sure, but given Florida's reputation since 2000 it wouldn't surprise me.

Has Georgia been called?

I really, really don't want Kemp to win.

Not called but he's liable to win.

I’m heading to bed so I’m not gonna pull articles on Texas and Florida, but one quick thing for Texas- yet again, white women voters fucked us (as did, obviously, white men).

So help me god, by 2020 I will have every female relative voting Dem.

Kemp arguably deserves to be in jail more than Trump.

Right now I think we only know about 4 total flips for sure: Illinois, New York, New Mexico, and Colorado.

Well, I don't know about anyone else but at this point, I'm just glad it's over.

Celebrate the victories and mourn the losses, sure, but let's keep on keeping on. After all, in just two more years, another, even more important election looms

So don't lose hope and don't give in to fear or despair.

Even if current races in red states haven't won, those that became close indicate that the groundwork for a flip has been set up, so long as people aren't so disheartened that they don't keep it up into the next cycle. And that's the tricky part, maintaining that momentum and teaching the youth vote not to bank on instant gratification like it tends to do.

Let me guess: the vote margin is so small that the purged voters would have most likely made all the difference?

[up]x5 the fact that it’s that close despite nearly Jim Crowe style voter suppression is insane.

What about all the votes which are currently on hold in Georgia? Or have they been released in the meantime?

So Rep keeps the Senate, Dem took back the House.

And that's more or less just as predicted by both sides.

How many house seats have democrats taken so far?

[up][up]Yeah. I think the Democrats lost more in the Senate than expected, but in the short term I'm not sure it actually changes much, practically speaking.

[up] NPR is at 25 and counting.

Step aside, Devin Nunes. Adam Schiff runs the House Intel Committee now.

Those 64 subpoenas you turned down, Devin. They’re getting approved on Day 1.

Oh man, the Arizona Senate seat is painfully close. Currently, Mc Sally (R) is beating Sinema (D) by a mere 4,568 votes. 648,883 vs 644,315

NPR has it at 25 atm; from my estimation it's looking like the total might be somewhere around 30 provided the current margins hold.

Oh boy that was a lot of pages I didn't read after a very big day. Pete Sessions is out, thank the Lord, while Cruz maintains his seat like I predicted. My hope is that Beto continues to help build Democratic infrastructure in this state and runs for a state office again, given how very close he came.

Can anyone give me an overview of how Democrats did with governorships? I can't quite make heads or tails of what's going on with that.
