The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

New Hampshire joins New York and Colorado in having a Democrat Trifecta; Democrats control the House, Senate and Governorship (both Chambers flipped in this election with NH). Minnesota's State House is also on track to flip.

NPR is calling Ann Kirkpatrick (D) winning AZ-2 over Lea Marquaz Peterson (R). Personally, I think it's premature, since only 22% of the votes have been counted, but it's something.

Tobias and Imca are also fired up to do something useful.

I wish, there is literally nothing I can do which is part of what makes all this so fucking frustrating.

I uprooted my life to escape this kind of crap, where a party of racist, sexist, morons with no ability to run an economy remain in control of the country indefinably by lieing and abusing quirks in the electoral system

And instead its another year of being reminded that that just followed me, only now I have zero ability do do any thing about it because I cant even vote.

I was never expecting Dems to win senate, but I was expecting them not to loose a large number of seats, and was expecting them to take at least some of the profile governors spots.

Instead they have lost Florida to a trumpet who might as well have been a parody where they also probably lost (100,000 votes down with less then 1% unreported) an 18 year senator to an actual criminal.... They lost Georgia to some one so corupt that its amazing there not in jail.

At the current point the gains do not seem to offset the losses.

King is in a dead heat, the other districts have flipped D.

[down][down] It may become a sweep for Democrats in the House.

[up][up][up] A large number? They lost two so far. And one of them was the guy who actually confirmed Kavenaugh.

@Crimson Zephyr: Considering that Republican now means being as close to Trump as one can possibly then I think it's pretty much impossible for most Democrats to do that.

Still if more Moderate candidates are winning then that does not bode well for more ambitious Presidential candidates and those hoping for a much bigger wave of reform from Democrats.

[up]x6 You can actually do a lot, even though you can’t vote. You can campaign. A lot of DACA kids campaigned for Beto; it’s entirely legal. You can talk “nice” republican ladies into flipping. You can help contact democratic voters to increase turnout. You’ve got a lot of power <3

[up]x10 So far, 3/4 of the House Seats have been taken by Democrats. Only King's seat (Iowa 4) is a serious competition. If King loses, then all of Iowa's Federal House Seats go blue.

So, let me see if I've got this right

The general consensus seems to be:

We took the House, and that's a good thing.

Losing some Senate seats hurts, but we didn't lose the Senate itself, because we never HAD the Senate

So overall, despite some disappointments, things turned out alright.

Is that about it?

@Cris: Sorry, I should have clarified; I meant has the situation really changed as far as the Senate's concerned? I already know that the Dems having control the House is nothing but positives. (Thanks anyway, though :P)

As an aside, the mention earlier of more aggressive Democratic candidates being more successful reminds me of the video posted several pages ago, about the GOP appealing to the Dem's better nature to dissuade them from doing things that actually work in favour of claiming moral victories. Linking into this, I feel like the popular image of the Democratic party in recent years has been one of fairly wishy-washy candidates that bank too much on abstract concepts like 'unity' and 'goodness' and never seem to directly address their opponents' blatant bigotry in the interest of seeming bipartisan - which frankly seems like a lost cause at this point. So I'd agree that what they'd need going forward are more candidates who speak candidly (no pun intended) about bigotry and hypocrisy.

The Senat is still counting, but after the last update three so far. And frankly, I have a hard time to be upset about someone who would vote for Kavenaugh loosing his seat, no matter if he is supposedly a democrat.
