@Swanpride: The past couple of elections have proven that an increase in hispanic voters really didn't change much and that a consistent stream of deplorable retirees will keep Florida reliably Republican for some time.
I hate it as a resident of the state but it's just the reality of the situation.
In sad news, Democrat Randy 'Ironstache' Bryce lost to Republican Bryan Steil in Wisconsin-01, the Seat Speaker Paul Ryan is vacating.
While we won't be having Speaker Ironstache, we'll at least have Speaker Pelosi. According to VoteBlue, we're 1 seat away from the Majority! I'll keep everyone informed.
How does the house stop the GOP agenda, they don't get to vote on appointments, nor overturn executive orders, or halt down things in there. They write the budget and protect Mullers job... Which is an issue and a pipe dream.
As for local victories, you mean like Floridia? Where they just elected a guy that had his head so far up Trumps ass that we thought the advert was a parody?
Things are not going well for us, and its about time to quit pretending they are.
Yah, viewing this as an outsider, I'd say you did pretty well. It seemed like taking the House was always the main goal here - and what pretty much everyone was expecting from a Blue Wave right from the start - taking the Senate as well would have just been a bonus, and as has been discussed, it's partly down to which specific senate seats were up for re-election as to why it went so lopsidedly bad.
Frankly, I reckon you should take a moment to celebrate. Obviously this doesn't mean you should sit back and assume everything will go perfectly next time - you did so well because you were FIERCE and UNRELENTING. Have you seen those fundraising figures? :V

Those sell-by-dates won't stop me because I can't read!@Mio Eh...Florida just got a huge number of voters which were blocked from voting beforehand. Remember, the bill to give back voting rights to former felons went through. Just do the math how this will affect the next election if the voting is so tight now (and keep in mind that we are talking about people who were kept from voting by Republicans until now).

I know this is ironic, coming from me, but why is everyone so down about the results so far? Yeah, we lost some races we were hoping for, and we did way worse in the Senate than we thought we would, but you know what, we've got a majority in the House. Maybe this is just coming from a place of low expectations, but I'm thrilled we've gotten that little bit of power, that little ability to say "No" to Trump and have it actually mean something.
To me at least, this election wasn't about whether or not we could crush the GOP, we knew from the beginning we wouldn't. no, for me it was about having some hope that we could gain a majority in any branch of the federal government at all. Yeah, there's still a lot of fight to go and several lessons to be learned from our failures tonight, but lets take a moment to celebrate the fact that something has gone our way for once.
Tobias and Imca are also fired up to do something useful. Their irritation can be excused, given the circumstances.
Still, like I said, a small victory is better than none. So yeah, drink a small peg of your favourite intoxicant, and get back to the slog of beating the GOP out from the Government.
I hold the secrets of the machine.538 currently projecting Democrats to gan 35 seats in the House, 12 more than they needed. The Senate news has been tough tonight, and votes for Governor in Florida, Ohio, and Georgia have been a blow. I thought Gillum had the edge in Florida, and Ohio is just bitter, especially because Courdray left the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to run for it only to lose. How Republicans, whose motto is "Let business lie, cheat, and steal from the people" can get people convinced that they're on the side of the people and the guy who uncovered banks illegally opening accounts and charging people hundreds of millions of dollars and made those banks cough that money up is the bad guy is so far beyond me I can't even talk about it without seeing red.
But we'll have the House. We'll block Republican bills and get proper investigations of Trump. Kris Kobach, perhaps the most poisonous Republican around, got his ass handed to him in a deep red state. Dave Brat, Bannon's first major political success, is out. Claudia Tenney, who claimed that all mass shooters are Democrats, is out. Steve King, the House's most prominent white nationalist (by far) is in a real fight and is currently down. Inroads are being made in state government, which I believe is the key to long term control in the current system.
Republicans fought and clawed for 50 years to get as much power as they have now. Democrats have to remember it will take more than a single midterm or presidential term to get it all back. Ever since Trump was elected I've said it would be the work of decades, of at least a generation, to get things back.
Sadly, tonight is looking like proof of that. We're not going to be able to hit fast forward on the process. It's a long road ahead, and giving up or despairing now doesn't make things any better. Time to start grabbing the future now, inch by inch.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |Exactly. We won a victory. A small victory, but a victory. Now we need to take that win, that momentum, and keep pushing.
If we can carry this forward into 2020 with a president as unpopular as Trump and a Senate map that actually favors the Democrats? That's the win. And that's the goal.
This isn't the end, it's the beginning.
On the Governor front, it's a little better than I thought; the Dems have already taken Illinois, Michigan, and New Mexico away from the GOP, and seem likely to get Kansas and maybe Iowa too.
Still waiting on my home state to say anything about any race at all ...
That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - Silasw@Swanpride: We will see if the still solidly Republican state government will allow such a thing to actually come to pass. It would be the first time they've effectively blocked or impeded a referendum, and I will expect they will do everything they can to halt them from voting anyway.
I honestly don't feel that the democrats will have a very good chance at breaking the Republican strangleholds on local and state government without some Federal law and enforcement, and that's probably going to need something to be done about the supreme court as well.
@Tactical Fox: Why is that? I don't think they were up for elections were they?

What we have lost in the Senate is some of our ability to block the Republican agenda. Every seat we lose is another Republican defector needed to stop whatever new bullshit the GOP's trying to pull.
But gaining a House majority at least gives us some leeway against their legislative agenda. Bills have to pass both chambers, after all. This gives us a bargaining chip we haven't had for the last two years.
We're pretty much f*cked for judicial nominations, however. Though we have gained the ability to bring impeachment charges against Trump that the Senate will proceed to exonerate him on.
