The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

We* lost Indiana. We lost North Dakota. We lost Missouri. We look about to lose Florida, Arizona, and possibly Nevada. What's the upside to being underwater even further in the Senate?

We're still leading in Misouri, Florida and Arizona are neck-and-neck, with Arizona only at 7% counted with Florida at 99%, and Nevada hasn't even started yet. Chill.

Seriously, it just sounds like a lot of you are intentionally misinterpreting what "Blue Wave" referred just so you could go "I was right". It's very strange.

No, the best case scenario was the original 538 forecast plus a couple of percentage points to flip Texas.

by the by, it looks like that Colorado amendment 74 is failing.

[up]x3 I don't think we lost one House Race yet.

As for the Senate, I wonder if it's because they a)were 'reluctant' Democrats (trying to distance themselves from the Mainstream party) but b)voted against Kavanaugh. Manchin easily won West Virginia, and as far as I can tell was the inverse of both (he didn't distance himself from the rest of the Democrats, but voted for Kavanaugh anyways). Honestly, Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing came at the worst time for us.

We're now at 16 flips according to VoteBlue. 7 Flips away from gaining that mystical +1, and it appears we might take all the House Seats in Iowa right now (Which is 4).

Missouri is behind but I'm not taking 61% reporting as the race being over. I still don't like calling Indiana called at only 85% reporting.

The one light in Florida is that the restoration of voting rights vote passed, that should make Florida is slightly less difficult nut to crack come 2020.

The Georgia gov seat is sad, those racist robocalls likely worked like they intended and my god that is so sad.

There are no sensible people in this country anymore let alone that state.

ABC currently projects Dems will win the House. 538 now has the Dem's chances at 100%.

Colorado is bringing in the good news today:

"There’s still a long night ahead, but two energy/environment issues on the Colorado ballot appear to be leaning in favor of environmentalists. With 69 percent reporting, Proposition 112, which would require all new oil and gas development to be located at least 2,500 feet from occupied structures and other “vulnerable” areas, is passing by 57.5 percent. Meanwhile, Amendment 74, which would force local and state governments to pay compensation when regulations or laws reduce the fair market value of their property, is opposed by 53.3 percent of voters — and as a constitutional amendment, it requires a 55 percent yes vote to pass."

And that's bad but also, not surprising. Going "I told you so" doesn't make sense in a situation where most people knew out comes like this were possible, or even likely.

New York joins Colorado in becoming a Trifecta state; Democrats now own their House, Senate and Governorship.

At this point, I'm just hoping they don't hit that 60-seat supermajority.

Okay, no. We are not bemoaning the “lack” of a blue wave when Dems are up by OVER 9% NATIONWIDE.

We’re fighting voter suppression, some of it near Jim Crow level, and awful gerrymandered districts. Taking the House is still a goddamn win. Picking up governorships and state legislature seats fucking matters, not just the senate. Jesus Christ, guys, it’s ok to be disappointed but overall tonight is a win. OVER 40% of Black men in Florida just got back voting rights. That’s 1.5 million people. More than the populations of each of the 10 smallest U.S. states.

538 has Democrats with a ~100% chance to reclaim the House, projected net gain: 35 seats, which has been holding for about an hour with real time updates.

I am a little bit confused now what a blue wave is supposed to be if not the Dems flipping a number of seats against all odds…..

A number of wins in the House that ordinarily wouldn't be in play due to gerrymandering or other mid-term election issues like low voter turnout. Plus wins in the state-level races like governor's seats. Which is exactly what we got.

In order to win the Senate the Democrats would've had to play perfect defense and not lose a seat while simultaneously winning in Republican territory. Since something like 2/3's of the Senate seats up for re-election this year were held by Democrats, that was already a pretty tall order.

We got a blue wave, just like the Republicans got a red one in 2014. It just wasn't big enough to hit the really high-level watermarks.

  2. How many are Republican but aren't a long shot to flip?
