The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Blue Wave isn't a thing. It was never going to be a thing. It was a pipe dream that people started talking about like two days after Trump's election in 2016 to avoid confronting the ugly truth of how bad 2016 truly went for us. It was a salve to ease people's anxieties about the Trump Administration.

That just sounds more like you misinterpreting what "Blue Wave" actually referred to than anything else.

Mitch is seriously the worst. Most dangerous Republican in Washington.

I've said this before but I don't think Mitch has anything remotely resembling a moral compass. Like, he just doesn't care, at all, except for "winning" at all costs.

Apparently, per 538s liveblog, in districts that went for Obama in 2012 and then Trump in 2016 the Democrats are leading in 13 out of 20. And in Romney/Clinton districts 7 out of 8.

There's some debate over what the new baseline should be for polling. This would seem to indicate that Trump's support was unique to him and might not be reliable for 2020.

I mean, only time will tell, but it's interesting to note.

At least the odds of Democrats securing California seem pretty good. I think.

A Beto silver lining:

Our 14th pickup. A House lifer, Pete Sessions, goes down in the TX-32

The Winner: Colin Allred

Beto fell short but he lifted Texas Dems in district after district.

What he said. If there was a binary choice between getting rid of Donald and of Mitch I'd go with getting rid of Mitch with no second thought.

So in the Senate ...

We lost Indiana. We lost North Dakota. We lost Missouri. We look about to lose Florida, Arizona, and possibly Nevada. What's the upside to being underwater even further in the Senate?

I know it's better in the House races; have the Democrats lost any districts to the GOP? There's too many for me to keep track of.

People think I'm joking when I say Mitch kills thousands of Kentuckians every year through programs designed to deprive the poor of medicine, insurance, FOOD, basic living expenses, and help for drug problems (such as not getting lethal ones).

No, he really is the villain from Dishonored. We need to keep him from rat plagues.

It's a blue wave. It is not as huge as I hoped, but considering that the deck is stacked for Republicans in every way possible, the results are encouraging.

Anyway, the Dems are now at +14

West coast polls are about to close, expect a bunch of House races to be called quickly and a few to take 3-4 days to be called.

Missouri and Florida remain to close to call.
NPR has the GOP up 10% right now in Missouri. That's not "too close to call." That's us fucking losing. Florida is 50/50 split right now. Arizona is at 49/49 but the reporting number is low.
