The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

538's live tracker is now giving the Dems an 88% of taking the House, which was where they were before the counting started.

Yeah, from what I'm seeing only 20%~ of the vote has been counted for Texas. I was expecting O'Rourke to lose anyways but it seems a bit early?

I'm watching Texas on NYT, Cruz's probable margin of victory just dropped nearly 3 points. He's still projected to win, but it's gone from +7.1 to +4.3 and it's been dropping as votes are coming in. It's looking like Cruz isn't winning places he has the advantage by as much as he should be.

Currently 538 has the Oklahoma 5th District at 51% for the Dems with 75% of the vote counted. The reason this is significant is that it wasn't even supposed to be a contest. The Dems were supposed to only have a 1 in 14 chance of picking it up.

Pretty much. From the NYT:

We think about 1.8 million votes remain to be counted. We think Ted Cruz leads in that vote by about 12.1% points, based on what we know about those counties and the votes counted so far.

Seems a little premature to me too, but I'm not on the ground in Texas and don't presume to know.
