Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Wow. The Florida amendment just restored voting rights to 40% of black men in Florida.
Texas has very few votes in so far, don't read into it, it is likely to be that Democratic areas happen to be reporting first.
ABC are calling more races, including the Tennessee senate race, which only has 13% of the votes counted.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI don't know. Winning this seat but not the Senate seems like a moral victory at best, and realistically a pyrrhic victory. Beto has been on a lot of people's lists for 2020 presidential nominees, and if he wins the Senate seat he'll almost certainly not run. Consider how well he's done and the brand he's built I think I'd almost rather he stay where he is and go for the White House in 2020.
I mean, I'm not going to complain if I never hear the name Ted Cruz again, but still.
x5 It's because that fool Matt C thought he was the Democrat.

No, securing any Senate seat in this map is a godsend, and anything that would help with taking Texas away from the GOP is absolutely worth it. If they lost Texas in a presidential election...
That's just it: would Beto having that seat actually help move Texas to the Democrats in a Presidential election? Or would he serve until he's up for re-election, and then lose because Texas reverted back to its conservative mean?
You're right in that a Democratic pickup in the Senate is a boon, I'm just concerned that it's a short-term win. If the Democrats don't win the Senate, and they most likely won't at this point, he's just going to spend his term racking up votes that the Texas Republicans will use against him with very little gain for the Democrats.

Given Texas' large urban centres and relative immigrant population? A local major democratic politician would be a boon in an election.
And none of the 'Lean D' and only 1 'Tossup' races have been called, which form the majority of the Democratic pickup opportunities. So there's still a long way to go.
If we can mobilize them. If they turn out. These are things I've been hearing for years now and they've never come to pass.

This is nowhere near decided on a national level, it seems like things are going more or less as predicted. Wait a few hours before the panic begins.
