The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This is nowhere near decided on a national level, it seems like things are going more or less as predicted. Wait a few hours before the panic begins.

[up] I know. I was pleased that he lost because there was a lot of money pumped into this particular campaign. Nothing nicer than Republicans spending money for nothing.

Looks like the Texas race is tight...Go Beto! You can do it!!!!! Cruz is a disgrace.

Illinois governor called for Democrat.

Just as a reminder, a number of polling places in one of the largest counties in Texas got delayed until just a few minutes ago.

Wow. The Florida amendment just restored voting rights to 40% of black men in Florida.

Texas has very few votes in so far, don't read into it, it is likely to be that Democratic areas happen to be reporting first.

ABC are calling more races, including the Tennessee senate race, which only has 13% of the votes counted.

I don't know. Winning this seat but not the Senate seems like a moral victory at best, and realistically a pyrrhic victory. Beto has been on a lot of people's lists for 2020 presidential nominees, and if he wins the Senate seat he'll almost certainly not run. Consider how well he's done and the brand he's built I think I'd almost rather he stay where he is and go for the White House in 2020.

I mean, I'm not going to complain if I never hear the name Ted Cruz again, but still.

I just voted on the way home from work. I went with a straight party-line vote for the Democrats given what all the candidates' statements were. It's weird seeing your former civics teacher on the ballot.

Looks like Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) secured her seat. At least that seat is safe now.

No, securing any Senate seat in this map is a godsend, and anything that would help with taking Texas away from the GOP is absolutely worth it. If they lost Texas in a presidential election...

How many seats need the democrats to pick up in order to flip the house?

Senators are arguably more important than the Presidency for long term change.

However, the map is much worse for us for the Senate. The 2020 Senate map is much better.

Damn...this blue wave needs to happen. I know it is difficult with all the manipulation going on, but it won't get any easier and the democratic voters need a victory now. And the world needs some checks on Trump. Like, two years ago.

That's just it: would Beto having that seat actually help move Texas to the Democrats in a Presidential election? Or would he serve until he's up for re-election, and then lose because Texas reverted back to its conservative mean?

You're right in that a Democratic pickup in the Senate is a boon, I'm just concerned that it's a short-term win. If the Democrats don't win the Senate, and they most likely won't at this point, he's just going to spend his term racking up votes that the Texas Republicans will use against him with very little gain for the Democrats.

Every Senate seat the Democrats take or hold now makes securing the chamber in 2020 that much easier.

Every Senate seat is a win. Remember, this time around a lot of the ones up for re-election are democratic already. Meaning next time around, there will be a lot of republican seats on the chopping block. The more seats the Democrats can get now, the better, though.

Given Texas' large urban centres and relative immigrant population? A local major democratic politician would be a boon in an election.

[up]x3 23, actually. We picked up 3, and have lost 0 so far. So we need 20 more to get a +1 in the House.

And none of the 'Lean D' and only 1 'Tossup' races have been called, which form the majority of the Democratic pickup opportunities. So there's still a long way to go.

If we can mobilize them. If they turn out. These are things I've been hearing for years now and they've never come to pass.
