The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up]I'm not really sure what you're point is. You're not making an argument for "principles beating partisanship", you're just venting how much you already hated the guy.

A Virginia seat flipped:

Democrat Jennifer T. Wexton defeated Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Va.), ending nearly four decades of Republican control of a key northern Virginia seat.

By capitalizing on President Trump’s unpopularity, Wexton, a state senator and former prosecutor, won 56 percent of the vote compared to Comstock who won 43 percent, with about three-quarters of precincts reporting.

She won by portraying the congresswoman as a Trump ally who was out of touch with a well-educated, diverse electorate that has begun to shift the district to the left.

“When we work together we accomplish great things!” Wexton told cheering supporters at a victory party. “We demand a better nation, a nation where we treat each other with dignity and with respect.”

Voters determined to send a message about Trump ousted Comstock after nearly a decade representing parts of the 10th District, first as a state lawmaker and then for two terms in the U.S. House.

Unfortunately, a large segment of Indiana republicans would vote for a rotting corpse so long as it had an R next to its name.

If something cost him than his wood chopping add. Frankly, why should people who want to get rid of republicans in the house vote for a guy who acts like a republican, and not even a moderate but a "go half Trump" one? I actually thought his add was for a republican at first.

I mean I get the notion that his district is more conservative, but this is idiotic.

So that's +3 in the House and -1 in the Senate, right?

[up][up]It’s not a district, it’s the state of Indiana, if you mean Donnelly. It went blue for Obama in 2008; there’s three strong blue populations, but you need big turnout to flip the state blue.

New Jersey and Ohio have both been double called for Democrats, indicating that while things in the senate may be bad they're not going to be catastrophic.

Uhhhh no. The ads barely mentioned Kavanaugh. Most of them were very broad “DONNELLY STANDS WITH THE RADICAL LEFT. DONNELLY WANTS OPEN BORDERS.” crap.

I don't know - I've been living in Indiana for a bit now, and I saw quite a few "Joe Voted No on Kavanaugh" ads.

Seems like it, though looking at NPR things are looking for overall for Dems:

According to the Guardian live-ticker the Democrats are currently +3 seats in the house race. Hopefully this is showing a trend

Florida is looking highly likely to restore voting rights to the vast majority of felons, this is likely to have a big impact in 2020, as felons who will regain their voting rights via this are largely African-America and will vote for Democrats.

It's official. It passed!

[up]x5 I’m in the Indy market; I saw the same 2-3 ads a million times. One mentioned voting against Kavanaugh and “he even supported Hillary Clinton!” Shocker. But I didn’t see any ads that emphasized Kavanaugh.

[up][up] Red state; if gerrymandering and turnout weren’t so bad, it’d be purple. And yeah, he tried to run as Republican lite. Did not work, pissed off a lot of Dems.

Quite frankly, if despite everything the GOP keeps control, I will have officially lost all faith in this country. How does Trump somehow defy all the odds and have everything just magically go his way?

Gerrymandering and voter suppression. But don’t give up. Fight back. No matter whether the Dems get Florida’s senate and governor seats, 1.5 million more people will be able to vote. Fighting for every inch matters.

According to NBC (and this Picture), with 46% of the vote, Beto O'Rourke (D) is ahead of Ted Cruz (R) for Texas Senate.

Even if we don't take the Senate tonight (and with Donolly's loss, my hopes for the Senate are shrunk), O'Rourke winning would be wonderful to me.
