Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Crimson Zephyr Which also means that the attempt to incentivize Democrats via bribery might also be used against them and spun as voter manipulation somehow (likely by claiming the attempt is cheating or ballot stuffing,or at least tantamount to both).
@wisewillow. Interesting correlation. I wonder if the Right wing knew this and has it as another reason to keep the quality of life lower for the poor?

This might be out-of-line, but do we need to have "I voted" posts? Not that voting isn't important (almost literally the most important thing an American citizen can do) but it's painfully repetitive and can bury other posts.
But in any case, congrats and thank you to everyone that has voted.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.I think we are now through all the Americans which usually frequent the forum.
Yes, I know about Three Arrows. He also made an excellent video about the Refugee Crisis you might want to link to the next time someone screams "Merkel invited the Refugees". His last one was interesting, above all because I had no idea that Sargon actually started out at the far left. That is quite a jump you make over time.
I have to admit that I was in danger of falling into the Anti-SJW mind-set, too, because damn those "Disney Princesses ruin my daughter" people are annoying (partly because I think that a parent has the power to control the media a child consumes, partly because their arguments often lack foundation and/or misaimed because they focus on the movies when they should focus on how the franchise is marketed), but when suddenly everything was supposedly SJW, I stopped using the term altogether because it had become an empty buzzword and a politically loaded term at the same time.
It was also helpful that the first time I stumbled over the far right at You Tube, they were ranting about the Refugee crisis and Brexit, and I had a way better idea about both than they had.

Unrelated directly to the elections, Colorado seems likely to pass the most completely idiotic amendment (quite what it's amending I'm not sure): it would require some level of government or other to compensate private land owners if a law or regulation reduces the value of their property.
Oh, and at the same time there's also a vote that would heavily, heavily restrict where oil and gas development can be established.
If both pass...
So while following 538's podcast
I came across this monstrosity:
I do want to mention something on the Massachusetts ballot:
The first ballot question is really weird.
It's supposed to limit the number of patients a nurse can see at one time, but it seems unworkable and badly written, and I ended up voting no on it. Here's the relevant part of the text.
- In units with step-down/intermediate care patients: 3 patients per nurse;
- In units with post-anesthesia care or operating room patients: 1 patient under anesthesia per nurse; 2 patients post-anesthesia per nurse;
- In the emergency services department: 1 critical or intensive care patient per nurse (or 2 if the nurse has assessed each patient’s condition as stable); 2 urgent non-stable patients per nurse; 3 urgent stable patients per nurse; or 5 non-urgent stable patients per nurse;
- In units with maternity patients: (a) active labor patients: 1 patient per nurse; (b) during birth and for up to two hours immediately postpartum: 1 mother per nurse and 1 baby per nurse; (c) when the condition of the mother and baby are determined to be stable: 1 mother and her baby or babies per nurse; (d) postpartum: 6 patients per nurse; (e) intermediate care or continuing care babies: 2 babies per nurse; (f) well-babies: 6 babies per nurse;
- In units with pediatric, medical, surgical, telemetry, or observational/outpatient treatment patients, or any other unit: 4 patients per nurse; and
- In units with psychiatric or rehabilitation patients: 5 patients per nurse.
The proposed law would also require every covered facility to develop a written patient acuity tool for each unit to evaluate the condition of each patient. This tool would be used by nurses in deciding whether patient limits should be lower than the limits of the proposed law at any given time.
The proposed law states that, if any of its parts were declared invalid, the other parts would stay in effect. The proposed law would take effect on January 1, 2019.
A YES VOTE would limit the number of patients that could be assigned to one registered nurse in hospitals and certain other health care facilities.........
A NO VOTE would make no change in current laws relative to patient-to-nurse limits.
It's something of a locally contentious issue, leaving a lot of nurses split on whether it's a good idea or not.
Personally, while I appreciate what they are trying to do, the proposed law seems a bit too confusing and weirdly written to make me feel comfortable with a yes vote.

Full (well almost full) results will be coming out around 1am US Eastern Time, initaly results will start coming at 6pm Eastern Time when the polls close but then the votes have to be counted, that will take a few hours.
Some results will take days, close races in California will take days (due to mail in ballots) and we may well have runoff elections that get moved to early December (Mississippi Senate and Georgia Governor).
I’m going to be up all night personally, as Alaska polls won’t close until 6am my time, so for you Marq I’d suggest going to bed and getting up as early as possible.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranLawmaking takes writing skills that not everybody has and many laws are very complex. Initiatives written by lobbies or non experts can be poorly or unclearly written for lay people. I am minded of Switzerland's "sex offender registry" initiative which was at odds with the penal code and whose sponsors spent much of the campaign reassuring us that it didn't mean what it meant. It passed anyway, leading to four years of squabbles in parliament about how to implement it. We did find a fairly good implementation at the end though.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI'll be going to the Polls in 30 Minutes, and I'll be voting Straight D (and 'none' for the few seats that don't have Democrats). I've got a good feeling that Peter Joffrion winning here in AL-D5, but I don't know how well other Democrats will do in this State. Maybe Walt Maddox can barely pull off winning Governorship (like Jones' Senate win a year ago), but I don't think he will win against Kay Ivey.
Jesus, I hadn't even considered that 74/112 combo. I voted yes on 112 but no on 74 because 74 seemed like a terrible idea on its own merits.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.
x5 The initiative was proposed by the one of the state's big nurses unions, I think.
While I'm not opposed to it in theory, as understaffing and overworking nurses in hospitals can be an legitimate issue, the actual wording seems very inflexible and confusing, and could potentially cause more problems than it solves particularly on smaller community hospitals, and the January 1 deadline is impossibly short.

I did my part! I just voted for Stacey Abrams and anyone with a D next to their name.
This is purely anecdotal but when I last voted in 2016 there were far more uncontested Republican positions, at that time the only Democratic candidate I could vote for was Hillary Clinton but now I had a large number of choices. Which if nothing else is a good sign, the Democratic Party can't win positions if it's not running.
It was also super convenient that my voting station was right across the street

I voted early last week, straight Ds and on alot of ballot initiatives. (And I may have stared at the machine for 10 minutes making sure the checks were in the right spot and the one at the top marked "Stacey Abrams".)
