Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And just two days before the election to boot. I'm sure this will go over well with the voters.

No offense taken
Meanwhile: Supreme Court declines to stop climate change lawsuit filed by young activists
...
The Supreme Court also didn't rule out bringing the case back to the justices after the appeals court rules. Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Neil Gorsuch said they would have extended the halt to the case.
My parents can remember when entire segments of the political spectrum weren't openly aping Captain Planet's Rogues Gallery. Does that count?
Inuendo Studios just did a very worthwhile video on some of the issues that result from the current way Democrats are approaching politics:
The tl;dr for the video is basically that Democrats care (too) deeply about pursuing the correct means of governing and that, as result, they're handing over way too much power to the Republicans (and the Alt-Right) who mostly only care about the ends.
Angry gets shit done. The standard view (at least among liberal democracies) is that law enforcement and the judicial system should be professional services that promote based on merit, and not be directly exposed to the will of the electorate, to do otherwise risks mob rule.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. They were chosen by a pseudo-democratic body that ignored the will of the people.
That doesn't make elected judges a good thing. Every democratic government has meritocratic positions for a reason because it's fine to elect leadership but you still need professionals who don't have term limits.
The judiciary should not ignore the public will, but it shouldn't be purely beholden to it either. Elected judges add perverse incentives to the position that stand in the way of handing out justice.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangTo my surprise, I agree with the video. I mean, I always dislike the idea that we should "go low" too, but the video has a point that currently the alt-right basically defines what "going low" actually means, by accusing the other side of exactly the kind of thing they do. Not that I think that the Democrats have any desire to even DO most of this stuff, but it is necessary to call the Republicans and the Alt-right out on it on every turn ("Hence the "I say the Racists think that you are a racist" line was so clever", because it was an attack which made it pretty much impossible for the Republican to answer in kind - I mean, what is he supposed to say, "The Antifa thinks that you are Antifascist"? That would hardly work), and to have clearly stated goals. Saying "we respect the democracy" is not enough, they have to say "we will fight for our democracy by putting a stop to gerrymandering and voter suppression". Clear goals people can get behind. Not just "we won't do that", but also "this is what we will do".
I am btw glad that my country does have hate speech laws. Many people argue that having laws like this curtail free speech. I say that hate speech is curtailing free speech.

TBH there really should be MORE cases of voting with the other party, but the other party is so unreasonable at this point ._.;
Either way it really is a bad metric, a beter one would be the things they vote with them or agianst them on.
