Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

> Nothing's gonna get better unless you vote, you pieces of garbage.
I'm sure non voters appreciate being compared to garbage
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverWhile true that isn't a productive position and should not be supported.
It just lowers the discourse of the thread and doesn't actually accomplishing anything positive if used.
Something like this ad is far more effective, show the cost of not voting and hope to encourage enough people to vote. Berating them while understandable is not productive and thus not truly righteous.

I have to wonder, what would happen if the military there opened fire on the militia/far-right activists or vice-versa?

Antifa/armed thugs hired by Soros/liberal extremists drunk on Fake News/some combination of the above, launching a cowardly False Flag attack on the brave defenders of our great nation (regardless of who fires the first shot)

Thing is, the military at the border wouldn't be opening fire on anybody. Because the military is only going to the border to provide logistical support. Any shooting will more than likely be done by actual border security, unless the MAGA idiots are suicidal enough to try to storm a compound.
As someone who actually knows what this border mission entails because my fellow guardsmen were actually sent on this mission, I would kindly ask you to not denigrate our military by associating all of us with alt-right scum.

There is zero reason for the military at the border and MAGA activists to fire on each other. They're on the same side and they're going there for the same reason.
The far more likely scenario that we all should hope does not happen is that one or both groups fires on the caravan.
On that note: VOTE.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. Most of the military probably won't even be armed. They're there to build tents and generally fuck around and ignore whatever comes across the border.
They're barely more than a token gesture from the Pentagon sent only so they can say they never technically disobeyed any orders from the President.
Just like they do with most of his demands.
Oh really when?I'll point out that there's been a military presence at our border for a very very long time, both democrats and republicans have signed off on troops there. Trump is just insisting there be more of them, despite having been apparently informed multiple times that they don't really want or need more troops. Basically, there's gonna be 30 dudes working in the motor pool instead of 10.
If a bunch of militia types show up they're quickly going to find themselves in way over their heads. That's a firearms or impersonation charge waiting to happen. In my experience with law enforcement, even the most conservative officer doesn't take kindly to armed civilians trying to do their job. It's stupid and dangerous. Hopefully they will be waved off with extreme prejudice, or better yet arrested and charged with the aforementioned crimes.
They should have sent a poet. The #1 situation I can imagine violence breaking out between militias and the government here would be the militias breaking laws while over there. Impersonation is plausible. Another could be if they illegally harm others.
The GOP has several options for how to respond to this, including “ignore it entirely”, “call it a false flag”, say “sure is a good thing we sent the army there!”, or call them extremists and distance yourself from them. In their shoes I’d do the last 2.

Day 650: Maximum harm.
1/ The suspect in the shooting that left 11 people dead at a Pittsburgh synagogue was charged in a 44-count indictment with murder, hate crimes and other offenses that could bring the death penalty. Robert Bowers entered the Tree of Life synagogue armed armed with Glock .357 handguns and a Colt AR-15 rifle, and told police he was there to "kill Jews." (Washington Post / Associated Press)

2/ Pipe bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc "conducted a domestic terror attack," according to federal prosecutors. Sayoc researched the addresses of his targets online and had photos of them on his cellphone. Sayoc allegedly intended to "maximize harm" to his 15 targets. Justice Department prosecutors said Sayoc began planning the "domestic terror attack" in July while living in his van, which was covered with photos praising Trump. (NBC News / ABC News)

3/ The Trump administration doesn't plan to renew the anti-domestic terror program, which funds the development of new approaches to prevent terrorism before it begins. The Department of Homeland Security said it has no plans to continue the program past the end of its funding in July 2019 and has told grant recipients that the funding was a "one-time" opportunity. 4/ Jamal Khashoggi was strangled and dismembered as soon as he entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul as part of a premeditated plan to kill the Saudi journalist and dispose of his body, according Turkey's public prosecutor. The statement from Irfan Fidan is the first official description by a Turkish official about Khashoggi's death and follows two days of meetings with Saudi Arabia's top prosecutor, Saud al-Mojeb. A senior Turkish official said Mojeb did not give Fidan the location of Khashoggi's body or the identity of the "local collaborator" who helped dispose of the Khashoggi's remains. The Saudis have shifted their story about Khashoggi's fate, initially denying any knowledge, then suggesting that "rogue" killers were responsible for Khashoggi's death, before acknowledging that Khashoggi was killed in a premeditated murder. 5/ Trump may deploy 10,000 to 15,000 military personnel to the border with Mexico in response to the caravan of Central American migrants. The deployment would double the number of active-duty troops operating there, and be roughly equivalent to the size of the U.S. military's presence in Afghanistan, and three times the size of the presence in Iraq. Yesterday, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said that the military was deploying 5,239 troops to support the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection, in addition to the 2,092 members of the National Guard already there. 6/ Trump blamed former White House Counsel Don Mc Gahn for Robert Mueller's appointment. Notables.
Facebook approved fake political ads by reporters posing as all 100 U.S. Senators. Facebook added a"Paid for by" transparency disclosure to political ads to indicate to users who paid for the ads that show up in their news feeds. The "Paid for by" feature is easily manipulated, however, allowing anyone to lie about who is paying for a political ad, or to pose as someone paying for the ad. (Vice News)

A 20-year-old pro-Trump media personality and disgraced hedge fund prodigy named Jacob Wohl and a Republican lobbyist named Jack Burkman were involved in the plot to smear Robert Mueller with false sexual assault allegations. Wohl allegedly created a fake company called Surefire Intelligence and attempted to pay women to make false allegations against the special counsel. The case has been referred to the FBI for further investigation. (Vox / The Atlantic / GQ)

I'm so glad that term limits are a thing because we can hope for a president that can be taken seriously again in the near-future
Question: I know that if the president and vice president are removed/dead, an acting president is put in place and that there's a special election at December if its not an election year. But I want to know who they can pick as candidates and how the voting process differs from regular elections
Honestly? Considering the sheer quantity of guns, both military and vigilante, amassing themselves at the border to point south under the leadership of violent rhetoric that has already provoked one mass shooting, I don't think it's at all unreasonable to be alarmed for the safety and wellbeing of the people in the caravan.
