The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Agreed. Taking her seat for the Dems is important, of course, but I honestly just want her out so we don't have to deal with her 'ooh, who knows, maybe I'll vote my conscience this time if enough people pay attention to me' thing anymore.

It's been fun.

I mean, she won't be (she's still widely popular in Maine) but... yeah. Maybe if she has a failed bid for governor again.

Then again, who knows? Maybe in two years the people of Maine will get tired of her.

During an interview with tech site Recode, Hillary leaves open the idea for running for president in the future.

[up][up]Seems more like she wishes she were President to fix the problems in the country, but she doesn't want to run again.

She just can't say anything without being misinterpreted.

Speaking of, when do you think we’ll get our first 2020 announcing? Hillary announced in April 2015; I’d bank on the first announcement in February 2019 if not earlier.

That sounds about right, no serious candidate would announce in say 2018 but early 2019 has potential.

Formal announcements will wait for the new year, but informal announcements will start coming after the midterms.

Clinton said twice in that interview she wouldn't run. Lord's sake, the pundits are just desperate to have her to keep kicking around that they willfully misinterpret everything she says.

She was saying "I'd love to be President since we've got so many problems, and I'll work to support the nominee." Period.

I'd say Harris and Booker are nearly shoe ins at this point. Biden will probably make a final call within months as well.

Biden should not run. He is one of the worst potential candidates.

Seriously, Clinton Derangement Syndrome is a hell of a drug. All those pundits are either infected or understand that there is a pretty penny to be gained from pandering to those who are.

No one should ever take that idea seriously.

Here’s my predictions.

Announce for publicity but quit within 3 months: Avenatti

Announce and run seriously but get eliminated/give up early on: Cory Booker, Andrew Cuomo, Joe Biden

Announce and runs credibly: Kamala Harris, Kristen Gillibrand, Joe Biden

Please god, no, no, no, but might announce and run seriously: Bernie Sanders

Why do you think so?
Announce and run seriously but get eliminated/give up early on: Cory Booker, Andrew Cuomo, Joe Biden

Announce and runs credibly: Kamala Harris, Kristen Gillibrand, Joe Biden

Why did you put Biden in two categories? Also, why do you think that Booker will be one to get eliminated early?

[up][up]Not again. Dear god, no, not again.

Disclaimer: I volunteered 20-40 hours a week for Bernie in 2016, was a Bernie delegate to the DNC, and introduced him at an 8,000 person rally.

And I think he needs to Stop.

[up] Biden I’m unsure of. He’s talked a big game, but he does value family, and might give up if he’s not a front runner. Hence, two categories. Booker I think will wash out early because he’s oddly charisma-less; anything he brings to the table, Harris or Gillibrand does better.

Why do you think so?

Because he's a dinosaur with a history of shoving his foot firmly in his mouth.

He seems like a great person but as a candidate, he would be terrible, the Democratic Party has changed greatly and we need someone who is actually connected to do that.

I would no joke prefer Sanders to him, at-least Sanders has a connection to the ideological changes that have occurred in the Democratic Party post-2016. Biden has the drawbacks of Sanders without any of the upsides.

Declined to join Trump in Pittsburgh, according to Wa Po:
  • Ryan
  • Pelosi
  • Mc Connell
  • Schumer
  • Mayor Bill Peduto
  • Sen. Pat Toomey
  • Gov. Tom Wolf
  • Allegheny Co. Exec. Rich Fitzgerald
  • Conor Lamb, who reps the area, said he wasn't invited to any event

Mc Connell and Ryan are probably just hiding out because of the midterms.

They just don't want to be on stage when he suggests the shooter was a good person. It seems like most Republicans (especially Ryan) aren't exactly being shy about not being chummy with Trump so long as he's still their useful blunt instrument.

I’m out right now but when I have time I will explains why I think Biden is a disaster. He would have to be an amazing candidate to survive his baggage and history has clearly indicated he isn’t. The anita Hill stuff? His close ties with the financial sector? His record on criminal justice? And who knows what ammo he would give his opponents himself.
