Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The construction of the bomb itself points to either a fake device or an inexpertly assembled one.
If you notice, the device seems to have two detonators. This points to one of a couple things, either the culprit just crammed some wires in a tube or made something scary looking, he wasn’t confident in his components which led him to the incorrect assumption a second detonator could act as a failsafe, or he didnt really understand how explosives work. There’s also the fact that he used a timer for a mail bomb, which is a legendarily terrible idea, and the time on the timer does not seem to correspond to delivery.
I’m leaning more towards incompetence, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up being fake bombs.

Reading that gave me this mental image of a radical Jihadist looking at the news and thinking 'those bombs must have been a false flag, American alt-righters are too dumb to have pulled that off!' :V
The misspellings also point to someone doing this in a hurry/impulsively, especially if they were doing it in a word processer where a misspelling, like the Florids one, would show up.
The name misspelling, I can easily understand. I have seen people and myself misspell names or words with similar spelling to Brennan's name.
Looks like a "Git Er Done" flag was stuffed into the device.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."
x4 Given the totality of the evidence, that seems very unlikely.
If I had to guess, assuming this is a real bomb, I would say the bomber is someone with a superficial knowledge of explosives but very little actual specifics. It almost looks like they learned bombmaking from TV dramas, but were apparently comfortable enough to handle relatively large quantities of explosives and produce multiple devices. Basically, your average armed American malcontent.

They should have sent a poet. This footage is being examined by both the NYPD Detectives Bureau as well as the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), which is a task force comprised of FBI and NYPD.
The device delivered to CNN is currently at Rodman’s Neck in the Bronx and it’s still being tested, the official added.
Once authorities are finished with the device, it will be sent to Quantico, where further testing will be done on the materials to determine what they are. Additionally, officials will determine how the device would function and who could have put it together.
The device delivered to CNN was capable of detonating, but it was unclear what kind of damage it would have done, according to two law enforcement sources.

A "Get 'er Done" flag? Really? Really.
I can't get over how stupid this guy is. And given all of the signs that this was done under the influence of a fleeting impulse, if not some sort of substance, it paints the portrait of someone lacking impulse control and/or emotional and general intelligence.
And for what? This guy ruined his own life for nothing.
Do not obey in advance.RE Get 'er done flag-
Liberal/leftist brilliantly attempting to frame a Trump supporting idiot or a Trump supporting idea ineptly attempting to frame Muslims?
Edit- Although I doubt anyone who knows me would think otherwise, I thought it would be good to note that I was joking here. I'm not positive, because stranger things have happened, but I really doubt the bomber is anything other than a Trump supporting extremist. I was thinking in retrospect not good to joke about a liberal/leftist False Flag Operation since some people are really suggesting that.

x5 If it's hard to understand, clearly it's because you don't know how a person with zero impulse control who latches on to hate-filled propaganda to find meaning in their life would act.
This person was likely just some idiot who tried to kill a bunch of people he hated. It's the simplest and oldest motive for murder.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI remember when Timothy Mcveigh was found out and there was a media circus about his motivations. This confused Timothy Mcveigh as well as a lot of people who lived nearby white supremacists, militia men, or other ideologues.
He'd been quite clear what his motives were.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Given how all the ones that were not delivered by mail were located in New York State, that seems like a good place to find the bomber.
I think that also brings us back to the stupid conclusion that the return address being Debbie Wasserman Schultz, was a half baked attempt at framing her.

if, so, I'd like to point out (a) beat you to it
, and (b) I was joking.

this whole thing's had me more in mind of Ted Kaczynski than Timothy McVeigh. So much so I've even spent the day relistening to a thing about him.
