Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

On Newt Gingrinch's rise to power.
Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.Judge Ellis has been big trouble. He was against even trying Manafort in the first place. His position that he didn't want Mueller bringing a political farce of a trial to his courtroom knowing damn well that Mueller didn't give a single solitary shit about Manafort's crimes and was only trying to weasel him into turning state's evidence on Trump. He made it very clear that he considered Manafort's case to be a waste of his time.
During the trial, he was very aggressive and hostile with the Mueller team, going out of his way on multiple occasions to rush the case along and restrict the evidence they could present to the jury.
This guy's bad news.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.On candidates, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, and Andrew Cuomo are almost certainly running. Warren seems to flip flop on weather she's interested, I expect that's highly dependent on who else enters the race. Bernie will likely run as well.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerHaving been (lurking) on this forum long enough, I feel I can safely say that you are preaching to the choir. Though, I do believe most of the reasons for the other people here are not his age.

x5 According to someone who actually argued cases in front of him, having to do that is actually sometimes jokingly referred to as “being Ellised”
She said that he an experienced and sharp as a whip judge, but he’s also known for his temper, sharp wit, absolute refusal to let anyone waste his time, and kind of terrifying to argue a case in front of, which applies to the prosecution and the defendant equally.

The Independent Governor of Alaska has suspended his re-election campaign and endorsed his Democratic opponent. He has stated the he does not want to split the vote and let the fringe lunatic the GOP nominated get in.

Out of curiosity what do you mean by "emulate him"?
Good for him, that's an independent who's actually worthy of respect.
There's no point being 'independent' if you just hand the Republicans the election.

A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Do you mean liberal? Libertarians are with the Republicans.
If someone wants to get people fired up for liberal causes like Bernie could then that's fine.
Might do us some good considering Bernie himself is something of a hack with a bunch of skeletons in his closet anyway. He needs to stay far away from office. Especially after his iffy stances on Russia and the help received during the primary season, he can't be trusted.

Oh really when?Whatever the academic definition of Libertarian is this week it's completely irrelevant to American politics.
Libertarianism is a far right wing belief system with heavy roots in white supremacy and plutocracy as far as anyone should be concerned.
Now I really don't care for Bernie at all but even I wouldn't define him in such terms.

Oh really when?![]()
What?
No, he's not.
I could conceive him being libertarian left
as a matter of personal views but politically his positions and policies are not libertarian. It's bizarre to call him a libertarian politician.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangHeard this as I was leaving work last night - the Saudi government confirmed that Khashoggi indeed died in the embassy
, but claims that it was after "a fight broke out" and have arrested 18 people tied to it.
So yeah, Implausible Deniability established for the Prince, and realpolitik will take care of a lot of the international outcry over it. Better Presidents than Trump have capitulated when it comes to Saudi human rights abuses.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"I think it's pretty disgusting (but not surprising) that the GOP is now trying to retroactively discredit Khashoggi so they don't have to ruffle any feathers with Trump, who believes Saudi Arabia.
Just, ugh.

The Manafort article got me worried. This Judge Ellis sounds like big trouble.
