Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't think it's even harmful in the short term. Most non-biased media has been painting it as "technically true" and more focus has been given to "and Trump won't pay up, because of course not." I don't think the middle-of-the-road voters, the ones that actually matter, are offended or anything.

Trump isn't willing to give even token criticism because unlike past Presidents he lacks even slight scruples.

Trump probably considers it a good thing that a minority was murdered. If he was the only one obsessed over a Senator's race, forces in "Me Too" jokes while insulting Native Americans, cosying up to dictators, quite frankly trolling on the issue of truth and facts, refuses not to sell weapons to terrorists because he makes too much money, then yes it would be fair to say Trump would be up there cheering the murder of a Turkish journalist.
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursOne particular complication re: Khashoggi is that Trump pointed out that he wasn't an American citizen, but neglected to mention that he was still an American resident (green card, worked for the Washington Post, et cetera), which makes his claim a not-so-subtle attempt at deflection and/or making it Someone Else's Problem.

Keep in mind that Jamal Khashoggi, the murdered journalist, was a permanent resident of America. He wasn't a Turkish journalist. He was an American journalist. He lived in Virginia. He wrote for the Washington Post. This fact has been criminally undermentioned, in my opinion.

He worked for the Washington Post, well there's your motive right there, Trump would be all for the murder of "fake news" journalists since fake news is anything not state sec.
You don't see what the big deal is? Okay, you all remember Jack Thompson?
He was the Florida lawyer crusading against video games and did everything in his power to belittle and malign gamers and creators, from telling a programmer's mother he was Hitler Youth to flooding a critic's email with gay porn. Compare, "Grab'em by the pussy," sexist and racist jokes, any opportunity to be a troll.
Thompson once said if a video game was made to his exact criteria (basically a game where you murder video game programmers) he would donate ten thousand dollars to the charity of the author's choice. The game was made and he refused to donate the money, earning widespread scorn and putting the lid on his coffin as the anti video game white knight. Trump did the exact same thing.

My issue is that this isn't the case just in Trumpland, but in most of the coverage. He's always "the Saudi journalist." Yes, Trump repeatedly dogwhistles by saying he's not an American citizen but the media's doing a piss poor job at remembering that he's an American resident.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. That sounds pretty silly honestly. Like those people who try to say Russia isn't eastern european. Most of the "western europe", "eastern europe", "middle eastern", and other similar descriptions aren't even based in geography anyway. They're based on common cultural memes and influences on the area and general population.
And for the record no, Turkish people have never been considered to be "white" in the US.

Oh really when?... also, you know he was born in Saudi Arabia? And lived in the US? He's not Turkish by any stretch of the imagination.

To be fair I did say it probably isn't a pivotal moment, but this is true all the same
If she's planning on a 2020 Presidential run and this question never gets answered, Republicans would drag her through the mud with it. You know they would. "BUT HER EMAILS THO" would become "BUT HER BLOODWORK THO". Whoever compared it to Obama's birth certificate is spot on; "What is she trying to hide?!" would be the big smear question.
Republicans are masters of making huge scandals out of nothing. Literally nothing in the case of "Kenyan Secret Muslim Obama". By getting this blood test done, Warren takes a potentially contentious nothingburger off the table. Republicans will have to look elsewhere for their invented scandal.
And, just in case it turned out she didn't have a drop of Native American blood after all, she did it a year before campaign season starts so that the short public memory span has time to stop caring that it was ever a thing in the first place.
Hmm, ok you've convinced me. My position has changed.
Strategically I think that this was the right move on her part, even if it's harmful in the short term I think you're right that over the long run it's better to detonate this mine now then step on it later.
