The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]The Republican spin machine is well practiced in making hay from whatever anybody it turns against does. Whatever.

Blaming her for this by saying she should have behaved differently when any action she made would have started them on their usual spiel is disingenuous, at best.

Birthergate knows no logic and couldn't find "decency" in the dictionary, if it even had one.

I have already addressed this, your position that it would have an equal effect regardless of what she did is unfounded.

Before this, they could make dumb jokes and call her a liar. That's it.

But now their narrative that she lied about her ancestry is buffed by the fact that it turns out that she barely has any Native American blood anyway, going back eight generations is worthless and does not justify mentioning it.

Does this mean that she used it to get a job? Of course not but the fact that their narrative was supported is a bad thing, and thus this was a miscalculation on her part.

I didn’t asking for a link to his twitter, I asked for a source.

Him claiming something via twitter is not the same as it being real, you shouldn’t post random statements from narcissists on twitter as if they’re actual statements of news rather than the deluded ravings of the moronic.

[up] oh sorry, misunderstood. Here’s what he was referring to.

A federal judge on Monday dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by the pornographic film actress Stephanie Clifford against President Trump, ruling that the president had not defamed her on Twitter last spring and ordering her to pay his legal fees.

The tweet in question was posted by the president on April 18, one day after Ms. Clifford, known professionally as Stormy Daniels, posted a sketch of a man who, she alleged, threatened her in 2011 as she was first considering speaking out about the affair she said she had with Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump called the sketch “a total con job,” depicting “a nonexistent man.”

In its decision, the court sided with Mr. Trump’s lawyers’ argument that the tweet included an opinion, which the president was free to express.

“The court agrees with Mr. Trump’s argument because the tweet in question constitutes ‘rhetorical hyperbole’ normally associated with politics and public discourse in the United States,” Judge S. James Otero wrote in his decision. “The First Amendment protects this type of rhetorical statement.”

I was more referring to the (shudder) “Horse-face” comment.

[down] the NYT. I got it from my app, so I was having a bit of a hard time getting the link.

Can I get a source for that quote? But yes that was what I was after, I wanted to make sure Trump hadn’t just made the entire thing up. If Trump tweeted that the sky was blue I’d want a source other than him to confirm it.

Elizabeth Warren did the right thing. Trump would have brought up this thing again and again and again. He still can do it, but if he is facing her in a debate, she can ask if he has already paid the money to the charity she picked out (which is one helping Native American Woman who suffered sexual abuse). So on the trail, he still has ammunition, but in a debate, it is now an opportunity to remind everyone how petty und untrustworthy Trump is.

And if he says anything about her claiming the heritage, she can always point to the video in which she, among other things, clarified that she is claiming ancestry, not heritage.

Hell, even if he brings it up in the press conference you can bet that some reporter will ask "have you paid the money yet?"

Trump is a bully. And the best thing you can do to a bully is to put him in the defensive. Hillary made the mistake not to, by trying to stay above the games he is playing. Elizabeth Warren is pushing - or should I say kicking - back without going down to his level.

The Republican reaction to what Warren did is worth less than zero consideration. Literally every course she could have taken ends in them criticizing her and calling her a liar, and they don’t care at all about being caught in their own lies so it’s useless there.

The only thing this did was make Warren look that much worse. To me, it came off as a bit of a publicity stunt, since it only really drummed up support from those who would have already supported her.

They should have sent a poet.

That was my opinion too, they've been calling her a liar over it and she responded by showing that she has... very slight Native American ancestry?

That disproves the most literal interpretations of their complaints but when you decide to list your ancestry then it's kind of dishonest to list an ancestry that is incredibly marginal and irrelevant. It doesn't mean that they're right or that she's a liar but it doesn't make her look better in my eyes.

I disagree. If he hadn't made the 1 Million pledge I would agree, but since he did, it is an excellent angle to attack back. The whole nonsense has now going on for years, we are far, far removed from filling fuel in the fire.

Plus, while white people making a big deal out of their native American ancestry is gross, it is just as gross to tell someone "you can't claim your ancestry because you aren't x enough anymore". It's not like she wants to be on a tribal list or uses it in any other way to her advantage. It is simply part of her personal family history.

This is kind of hilarious.

A new dating app for Trump supporters that wants to “make America date again” has leaked its entire database of users — on the day of its launch.

The app, called “Donald Daters,” is aimed at “American-based singles community connecting lovers, friends, and Trump supporters alike” and has already received rave reviews and coverage in Fox News, Daily Mail and The Hill.

On its launch day alone, the app had a little over 1,600 users and counting.

We know because a security researcher found issues with the app that made it possible to download the entire user database.

Elliot Alderson, a French security researcher, shared the database with Tech Crunch, which included users’ names, profile pictures, device type, their private messages — and access tokens, which can be used to take over accounts.

The data was accessible from a public and exposed Firebase data repository, which was hardcoded in the app. Shortly after Tech Crunch contacted the app maker, the data was pulled offline.

Emily Moreno, the app’s founder and a former aide to Sen. Marco Rubio, commented Tuesday, confirming the exposure.

“We have taken swift and decisive action to remedy the mistake and make all possible efforts to prevent this from happening again,” she said. “Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily suspended the chat service on the app while we implement new security protocols. We are also taking immediate steps to engage a leading, independent cybersecurity firm to pressure test the system to ensure it is secure against other vulnerabilities.”

According to the app’s website, “all your personal information is kept private.” Except, as it happens, when it’s not.

The picture’s great too, since it actually is diverse, when trump supports are generally not.

How is it a useful angle of attack? She has proved that instead of 0% Native American DNA she has something like 0.2%. I don't see any reason to believe that it will help her when arguing against charges of dishonesty pointing out that what you said was technically true isn't actually a slam dunk response. And can be used to support the idea that you're being disingenuous.

I don't think this will be some pivotal event but to act as if it's actually a victory just seems counterfactual, there's a reason that the consensus seems to be that she made a mistake.

[up][up][up] It’s not an excellent angle of attack. How many times have people caught Trump in an obvious lie, only to find out he and his supporters just don’t care? You could catch him in a lie a day for the rest of his presidency (and we probably will) and it wouldn’t even matter.

That promise was worth less than nothing, and all the DNA test does is make Warren look publicity-hungry. Nobody who supports Trump is going to be swayed by something like that.

They should have sent a poet.

[up]Wasn't it a recurring point that it doesn't matter what will or won't sway Trump supporters, because they've already drank the Kool-aid at this point? What's important is how it affects independents and non-Trumpian Republicans. From what I've seen, it seems like it was generally considered a bad move, though in my opinion it's just the lesser of several evils.

Yeah “Trump is a lying asshole who’d never give money to worthy causes even when he pretends he would” isn’t exactly an angle of attack that needs more evidence behind it.

It's a good way to show how petty his attack against her is.

Honestly, we are talking here about her writing something in a meaningless form she heard from the mother.

Regarding the reaction: Every show I saw talking about it made fun of him, not of her. So I would say it worked.

“Critical of Trump” doesn’t imply “good for Warren”. And this really does make her look publicity hungry.

She didn’t need to publish a DNA test to show his attack was petty. It was obviously, transparently petty from the moment he said it. She could have kept the higher ground and struck back with a statement pointing that out, but instead she chose a stunt.

What a weird day this is for Spartan to be the one pessimistically forecasting and me to be the one saying it's cool, everything's fine. But that's what Imma do.

See, I think it's good that Warren did this now, when there's still about a year before anyone starts seriously campaigning for 2020. If there was even the tiniest shred of doubt in her mind about the family story, now's the time to get the blood work done.

If she's planning on a 2020 Presidential run and this question never gets answered, Republicans would drag her through the mud with it. You know they would. "BUT HER EMAILS THO" would become "BUT HER BLOODWORK THO". Whoever compared it to Obama's birth certificate is spot on; "What is she trying to hide?!" would be the big smear question.

Republicans are masters of making huge scandals out of nothing. Literally nothing in the case of "Kenyan Secret Muslim Obama". By getting this blood test done, Warren takes a potentially contentious nothingburger off the table. Republicans will have to look elsewhere for their invented scandal.

And, just in case it turned out she didn't have a drop of Native American blood after all, she did it a year before campaign season starts so that the short public memory span has time to stop caring that it was ever a thing in the first place.

That was my opinion too, they've been calling her a liar over it and she responded by showing that she has... very slight Native American ancestry?

Yes, that is how she responded. She said that she had a Native American ancestor and the blood test proves she does. According to the report, her lineage includes a single person of Native American descent 6 to 10 generations ago.
