Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The best comic book cover of all time is the first one Cap appeared in where he is just punching Hitler.
And he's being shot at, but he doesn't care, he's punching Hitler!
But, yeah, the GOP claiming Lincoln is aggravating to me. It shows how little those fools pay attention to history.
And Teddy was a cool guy and a badass so stronk he only died when he didn't want to live anymore.
But what was the main thrust of Teddy's views on race? I'm interested.

Day 634: Who cares.
1/ Trump suggested that "rogue killers" may be responsible for the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi because King Salman "firmly denied any knowledge" of what happened. "It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers," Trump said. "Who knows?" During an interview with "60 Minutes," Trump said that even though the Saudis denied involvement in Khashoggi's disappearance, it was still possible that they were responsible. "We're going to get to the bottom of it, and there will be severe punishment." (New York Times / Politico / CBS News)

2/ The Saudis are preparing to admit that Khashoggi's death was the result of an interrogation gone wrong. Previously, Saudi authorities had maintained Khashoggi left the consulate the same afternoon of his visit, but provided no evidence to support the claim. Multiple sources said the Saudis are discussing a plan to admit that Khashoggi was killed after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, but that the operation was carried out without clearance in an effort to absolve Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of responsibility by giving him plausible deniability to say he didn't order the killing and didn't know about it.(CNN) / NBC News)

3/ Jared Kushner appears to have paid almost no federal income taxes from 2009 to 2016. Kushner used a tax-minimizing loophole that kept his tax bill low by reporting real estate losses based on "significant depreciation," according confidential financial documents. Nothing in the documents indicate that Kushner broke the law. Despite Kushner Companies being profitable, Kushner has been losing money for years as far as the IRS is concerned, because the losses were driven by depreciation. Real estate investors deduct a portion of the cost of their buildings from their taxable income every year. (New York Times)

📌 The Re-up: Trump inherited his family's wealth through fraud and questionable tax schemes, receiving the equivalent today of at least $413 million from his father's real estate empire. Trump has repeatedly claimed that "I built what I built myself." Trump and his siblings used fake corporations to hide financial gifts from their parents, which helped Fred Trump claim millions in tax deductions. Trump also helped his parents undervalue their real estate holdings by hundreds of millions of dollars when filing their tax returns. In total, Fred and Mary Trump transferred more than $1 billion in wealth to their children and paid a total of $52.2 million in taxes (about 5%) instead of the $550+ million they should have owed under the 55% tax rate imposed on gifts and inheritances. Trump also "earned" $200,000 a year in today's dollars from his father's companies starting at age 3. After college, Trump started receiving the equivalent of $1 million a year, which increased to $5 million a year when he was in his 40s and 50s. Trump has refused to release his income tax returns, breaking with decades of practice by past presidents. There is no time limit on civil fines for tax fraud. [Editor's note: This is a must read. An abstract summary does not suffice.] (New York Times)

4/ Sen. Elizabeth Warren released the results of a DNA test that provides "strong evidence" of Native American ancestry dating back six to 10 generations. Warren has been mocked by Trump and other Republicans for claiming she has Native American blood. (Boston Globe / NPR / Washington Post)
5/ Trump denied offering Warren $1 million to take a test proving her Native American heritage. "Who cares?" Trump said when asked about Warren's DNA test. "I didn't say that. You better read it again." At a rally in July, Trump said: "And we will say, 'I will give you a million dollars, paid for by Trump, to your favorite charity if you take the test and it shows you're an Indian … we'll see what she does. I have a feeling she will say no but we will hold it for the debates." (Washington Post / CNN / The Hill)

Notables.
Trump said it doesn't matter whether Christine Blasey Ford was telling the truth, "because we won. It doesn't matter." Ford testified that Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were in high school during the 1980s, telling the Senate Judiciary Committee that she thought she would "accidentally be killed" by Kavanaugh. Since I'm here and this is (unfortunately) related to US politics, I'd like to recommend Maus. It's an incredibly powerful story about Jewish people during the Nazi regime, and using Petting-Zoo People in the setting of a graphic novel only enhances the story. It's fantastically well-written and drawn, and the fact that it's all based directly on true events just makes it all the more heartbreaking.
If I remember correctly, TR was relatively progressive in his views on race and gender. Standard Values Dissonance and Society Marches On is in full effect though.
He invited Booker T. Washington, a prominent leader to the black community to the White House, making him the first African American to have dinner in the White House, nominated the first Jewish cabinet member, and supported Equality for woman.

He was progressive for his era, which is to say he said some pretty questionable stuff but considering what other people were saying around then it wasn’t too bad.
He spent a lot of time hunting in the US West and Africa, and typically worked with indigenous people in those places. As we all know, exposure breeds tolerance.
They should have sent a poet.Perspective is key.
Exactly, not to mention that the 2010 elections
were absolutely devastating for the Democratic Party and the Republicans went into it with a mere lead of 7 points.
If we can go into the midterms with 10+ points then they could get destroyed in the House and State positions, the latter of which is super important due to the fact that as I've said redistricting is happening post-midterms.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI think there were a bunch of Vox videos that explained why the Democrat and Republican parties pretty much swapped political wing and ideals over time. Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln would probably be modern Democrats and Andrew Jackson would fit like a glove in today's Republicans. Riches and racism I think it was.

Si Vis Pacem, Para Perkele
Reading tropes such as You Know What You Did
Well after a short break Stephen Colbert came out swinging against US President and political punching bag Donald Trump. Now there are some very obvious things that could be pointed out but I'll give you one that may slip under the news.
Here Trump makes a number of racist slurs against Senator Elizabeth Warren before claiming he will donate a million dollars to charity if she does a DNA test and prove she is a Native Indian. Well Senator Warren did and the results are she is, only for Trump to pull a Jack Thompson and refuse to donate any money, even when the video is shown saying he would.
Now, how many millions of votes are the Electoral College going to need to chip in over this one?
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursSo you remember that poll I linked last week that said voter turnout was only at 35%? Well, 538 says this might not be such a bad thing. And that young voter turnout this year might be more favorable than some expect.
Also, House chances currently at 85.1%.

Pretty sure she didn't do the test to "build an identity". People - meaning Trump - doubted she had ancestry at all, so she did the test to check if she had any or not.
Ancestry and heritage are not the same thing.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyBy mentioning it at all.
If you believe that you have Native American ancestry and feel fit to mention it then it's a safe bet that it's at-least somewhat part of your identity.
Regardless there's a reason that she's being criticized by Native American groups, she has no practical connection to Native American heritage or ancestry and the DNA test simply reinforced that fact.
If I were in Trump's position I would refuse to pay too. She proved nothing.
And she found out that she barely did, that's like me claiming that I have African ancestry because I'm descended from people who left Africa. It may technically be correct but there's no point beyond tastelessly hitching yourself to an existing and unprivileged heritage that you have no real connection too.

Have him kill more Neo-Nazis. Have him kill a Neo-Nazi who was shown in an earlier scene telling him to stay out of politics and just arrest the real criminals, like illegals and druggies.
