Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Their audience may not be small per-se but it is a minority and relying on a demographic that is aging out, obviously, that doesn't mean that their doom is assured but they are facing a major demographic problem that I don't really see them being able to solve in their current state. Who knows what'll happen.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe best-case scenario would be that Trump, in this term, is the last Republican president. I don't see that happening. Even in a world where Trump manages to kill the Republican party for good in the long-term, I'm betting that we'll have at least one more Republican president after him. Maybe the Republican party decides to backpedal and tries to sell their next candidate as a representative of the new better Republican party. Regardless of if they're sincere or not, they'd fail: their base would eat them alive.
For what it's worth, I'd actually argue that Trump is a backpedal of sorts from W. So if they're backpedaling from Trump then that would be a pretty good sign that they're treading water at best.
Leviticus 19:34We see no shortage of 20-something anecdotes who buy into far-right views, but the overall data
doesn't really show the same thing.
Obviously some millennials and whatever-the-generation-after-them-is-called will be Conservatives but there isn't really data to suggest that there's enough of them to be a viable electoral demographic for the Republicans. So unfortunately for them, it's not going to be as simple as a bumper stock of reactionary twenty-somethings riding out of the sunset to save them.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangFree trade arguably, IIRC Bush supported the Republican orthodoxy in favor of free trade while Trump through his tariffs and contempt for trade deals has been soundly rejecting that. So that's at least one shift in policy.

Not helping the GOP here is the repeated instances of school shootings. That the GOP is complicit in these via their supporting gut-totting crazies right's to have guns would not win them any favors among the demographic of future voters. Their other policies make them look borderline solipsistic (and bigoted) on top of that, which probably would hurt them further among future generations.

Exactly.
If the Republican's weren't so insane and were a proper center-right party in the line of Germany's CDU then their demographics issues would be likely to just disappear, but unfortunately the inmates run the asylum and short of several devastating defeats they just aren't going to be replaced anytime soon.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe important thing to note is that loudness does not necessarily equal size. Those angry alt righters are very willing to shout at the public, which makes them seem a lot bigger than they really are. Remember; a lot of their more recent gatherings in public spaces have actually attracted far fewer supporters than they would have liked. (Smaller groups also allow said groups to be much more extreme, since it lets you enforce conformity a lot more.)
So, since I don't think its been posted here yet:
(For context: The Proud Boys, a Right-Wing hate group, beat up some people in NYC after a speaking event hosted by the Republican candidate for Governor (where they reenacted the assassination of a Japanese socialist during the 60s). Cuomo, James, and basically the rest of the major Democrats in the state called for the arrests of the men responsible, but none have been arrested thus far.
Here
is a Wa Po article on the topic, but be forewarned that the Post took the "both sides are equally bad" opinion to a situation that really doesn't deserve it. More info from that article confirms three of the anti-fascist protesters were arrested, and yet none of the Proud Boys were...

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerOn the senate I think it’s worth noting something, while the Dems only have a 20% chance of taking control of the senate they have a 52% chance of either holding even or making gains.
The Dems are more likely to lose seats then gain them, but the most likely outcome is no change.
Also in the event of the Dems making one net gain (which is predicted at 15.5%) in November then things aren’t over, because there will still likely be the runoff in Mississippi.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWell, the German CDU is basically in the area of the move conservative democrats. Though its sister party, the CSU, just got a very clear answer in their home state Bavaria during the local elections this week what the Germans voter think about drifting too far to the right (basically it turned out that the Af D voter who they want to pull back by picking up Af D talking points only make up around 10% of the votes, while the moderate voters left the CSU in droves in reaction, leading to the Greens now being the second strongest party - for context the CSU used to rule with an absolute majority, they lost around 15%).
Anyway, let's assume that the Republicans really fall down...I can actually see the Democratic party splitting in the future if this happens.

Well, Trump promised 1 million dollars to Elizabeth Warren's favorite charity if she proved she had Native American ancestry.
She does.

In order for the GOP in its current form to become politically unviable I figure they'd have to lose the presidency for 3 decades or maybe more than that. And honestly I think that's a pretty tall order that I'm not entirely sure can be achieved, although I hope so. There's simply been far too much time and money spent by the right to create an audience for their policies, and that audience is anything but small.
