Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes; every and any Politician can be impeached, including Supreme Court Justices. It has only ever happened once, however, to Justice Samuel Chase in 1804 (for Political bias and arbitrary rulings, and promoting a partisan political agenda on the bench), and he wasn't found Guilty.

Yeah, court packing my in-fact be easier. Still, there's a first time for everything and we live in interesting times (in the apocryphal Chinese sense) so who knows...
Preach it.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI’d say formally charge him with perjury but yeah I’m with you. It takes 66 senators to do it though which isn’t easy, it means winning pretty much everything this year and then doing that again in 2020. Though if it’s only a shortage of one or two votes the Dems could make gains in 2022 even if it is a midterm against them.
Manchin can redeem himself by being the final vote to convict in the senate.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranCourt packing is just altering the composition of the court for political ends, adding any justices would be court packing.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThere is no way in Hell any Republican Senator is going to vote to Impeach a young, conservative Justice with a Democrat in office (we are assuming substantial Democratic gains in 2020, yes?). They've made their bed and doubled down.
And getting 2/3rds of the Senate blue sounds like a longshot, even in 2020.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. There are no tiebreakers in the Supreme Court. The SC is the final court of the land that a case can be appealed to; nothing starts there. When you're taking a case to the Supreme Court, it is basically your last chance to request an official do-over of a decision already made.
Consequentially, if the SC's decision is tied between justices, the resulting action is no action: the ruling of the previous court remains intact, whatever it was.
Ten Justices who consistently vote 5-5 would functionally paralyze the Supreme Court from ever making any real decisions, leaving the decision-making process in the hands of the lower courts. This might not be a bad thing.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Of course it's a question of ethics.
Ethically I view the consequences of a symbolic no vote to be worse than a symbolic yes vote, you obviously disagree.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangUgh, this alongside using #Me Too! as a shield really makes me despise Collins. She's scum and I can't wait to see her stupidity catch up with her.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangJust FYI, there was a period of time in the 1800s when the court had 10 justices. There's real precedent for expansion that simply no one is willing to invoke.
Apparently, there's a pot accumulating for Collins' next challenger. Make a contribution so we can try and get her out next election.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Yup, in fact, if we're thinking of the same thing it crashed
after receiving more than $2 million in donations.
So I feel very comfortable assuming that she's going to deeply regret her decision come 2020.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangLet's take out the trash.
We need to fucking decimate the Republicans in this midterm. They appointed a lying, alcoholic rapist to the highest court in the country just because he's willing to cater to right-wing interests and insulate God Emperor Trump from any repercussions for his wrongdoings. We can't let them get away with this.
No beer?! But if there's no beer, then there's no beef or beans!I just donated a small amount of money to Heidi Heitkamp, Beto O'Rourke, and Jacky Rosen.
Even if we can't take back the Senate completely, we need to get as many states blue as possible
EDIT: Donated to Kyrsten Sinema as well

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.There's a fund for lindsey graham
and mitch mconnell's
opponents as well. I don't have any news on how well these funds are doing at the moment though.
I don't know how likely it is to get rid of mcconnell but nothing would make me happier.

Ok, I see the issue, we aren't talking about factual questions like whether or not he decided the vote we're talking about values such as how much one cares about symbolism.
Honestly, this isn't really a discussion that's going to go anywhere because it's just too subjective. Personally, I care about symbolism as a means to an end and how it has practical consequences. You obviously care about it by itself, which is fair and reasonable but we're looking at this from completely different perspectives (if not ethical frameworks) so there's not much discussion that can be had about it.
If it's ok with you I'd rather to just agree to disagree.
