Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I couldn't care less about Manchin's reelection right now, this is a matter of principle, on whether being a successful (conservative) man should make you immune to any kind of allegations, especially women's and the answer seems to be yes. What a disgusting example the leader of the free world is showing to the globe, and not even the first time, given Trump.
The midterms won't change the fact that the Supreme Court will be decidedly tainted for decades more to come, all because of a "moderate" democrat.
Life is unfair...> Trump doesn’t have “unlimited power”
No but as President he is the supreme figure of authority, his Government and military answer to him,you are correct of course that he does does possess unbridled power, this is due congress, however, there is only so much they can do and with the house full of Republican they let him do wants until they disagree
And yes the fear mongering is silly, cut it out
have a listen and have a link to my discord server![]()
To be fair, Byrd himself considered his involvement in the Klan to be an Old Shame.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"@Cooking Cat: Let all that negativity out, it's probably healthier. I was truly hopeful for America for a while, but when Kavanaugh is confirmed, it'll just reflect the true colors of the country I was refusing to see until now, maybe because I was too young to understand what Trump's nomination meant at the time. I hope Europe stays as far away as possible like Trump wants.
The midterms can do no good when the culture that propelled these men and their enablers will still remain in Congress.

Probably.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. There are a lot of limits to the president’s actual authority, and that’s on top of the general dysfunction the executive branch is exhibiting right now.
Yeah...no. Please stop with this.

They should have sent a poet. And of course motivate the Republican base with massive turnout, giving the republicans both a good chance of retaining control of the house and getting a supreme court seat and another time to spout rubbish about needing more guns.
They have so much to benefit from this that if anything happens I wouldn't be surprised if it was a Republican plot to frame the Democrats.
@Marq: Damn Marq, this broke you more than me it seems. The solution isn't assassination, that would only turn Kavanaugh into a martyr which I refuse to let happen. It's packing the courts. I was against it before, but hey, given the GOP have absolutely butchered everything the Supreme Court is supposed to stand for by playing dirty and throwing vulnerable people under the bus, I don't care at all if the democrats play dirty to restore the balance.

Kavanaugh is different, he was one of the worst modern SC picks because of all he represents and how the democrats once again failed to stop it. But what I assume many people were expecting, including me, was the Democrats would take the Senate in november and stop the GOP from nominating a scumbag. Well, never expect the US to do the right thing until they're on the ground is the lesson I'm taking away.

Life is unfair...It has been noted many times that the chances of the Senate flipping is low, possible but low. If you 'expect' the Dems to take it as if it's a given, then frankly your views are unrealistic to begin with.
It's also a fact that the GOP always, on paper, had the votes to push through anyone they want ever since they literally changed the rules for Gorsuch. The fact that it's still been a hard fight, a hard march is significant in the long run. Yes, if he gets confirmed tomorrow it's a loss. And a huge one at that.
But just like with the Tax Reform, the favor was always on the GOP's side. The Democrats had no actual, hard power to stop it.
Yes, if Manchin ends up the deciding vote, the Democratic Party should *crucify* him.
But it's hardly as if the Democrats just rolled over.

"You can reply to this Message!"

Stop being melodramatic. This doesn't change Trump's power one bit. The timeframe it would take to do anything about Trump via the courts is much slower than just voting the fat orange out.
