Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x5 Doesn't matter to me; Jones, Heitkamp, and every other Red State Dem is voting No, which is the right thing to do until there's a real investigation. Republican Lisa Murkowski is most likely still going to vote no. Manchin's re-election odds would've taken a hit, but he's pretty much guaranteed the seat no matter what this year. He could've done the right thing and still won by 2-3%; instead he's doing the wrong thing and is going to win by ~10%.
Morals are important; if we're only in this for the win, and not for the message, then the Democratic Party might corrupt just as badly as the Republicans have.
x4 Yeah, no, let's not do that either.

It was really obvious that the maybes were in a sick game of chicken as they didn't want to be the reason the vote failed/passed. Manny voted yes to move it forward so Mur felt safe voting no and Collins had already said she'd be announcing later in the day so she could see where everything stood. With Flake voting yes she didn't want to be the reason the vote failed.
Pack
the
court
Put three on that bitch. the republicans get pack in power and put four? put eight. Sixteen? Thirtytwo. Eventually everyone will be on the court and we can finally have a direct democracy.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?I mean... Manchin probably knows WV's voting habits better than I do, so I'm sure he's factored this in, but it seems to me that this would hurt his chances of victory. He still needs the Democrat's voter base to win, and your average Republican is still gonna prefer someone who votes with their party 100% of the time over someone who does so 20% of the time. And surely you can't very well rely on the notoriously fickle Democrat voter base to continue to go 'beggars can't be choosers' after being spit on this dramatically.
Considering Manchin‘a lead in the polls I don’t think he’s doing this for tactical reasons, he honestly supports Bret and thinks he should be on the Supreme Court.
Honestly at this point I couldn’t fault any West Virginian democrats for staying home, “is pro-sexual abusive, alchaholic perjury committers being on the Supreme Court” is a red line I can’t fault people for having.
X8 I see that the jet offer has been made, not that it has been accepted.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt's the repubs shooting themselves in the foot.
- They remove any energising effects of a Supreme Court seat being on the line.
- They piss off even more people.
- This delegitimises the Supreme Court—particularly when organisations on their own side were questioning Kavanaugh's temperament.
- Common sense should dictate not putting the most scandal-ridden person you can find in one of the highest offices for the rest of their life because it works against you.
- See #3 for how this could easily justify court packing rather than accepting that it's an age-based lottery (particularly if anything more surfaces)
There are already people screaming on Game FA Qs about this being the end of Democracy and Trump now being a defacto dictator because of Kavanaugh's inevitable confirmation and belief of the President being immune to criminal prosecution or civil suits

Let’s not use Game FA Qs as a source for insightful political analysis.
This battle isn’t quite over yet, and even if it doesn’t go our way it’ll help us in the midterms.

They should have sent a poet. It's odd.
I used to be the most pessimistic, fearful paranoid person. But since Trump got elected, I've been making much more of an effort to not lose hope and give in to despair. I'm more politically active now than I've ever been
You'd think it would have the opposite effect

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.

How many times does it have to be pointed out that if there's enough yes votes otherwise, Manchin would vote yes.
