Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Republicans don't care about the electoral consequences of appointing Kavanaugh. Most of them are safe (most Senate seats up for election this year are held by Democrats) and even if it does cost them their majority, they just appointed an extreme right-wing nutbar to 25-40 years on the highest court in the land. Furthermore, they will never back down on trying to push an anti-choice judge, and Trump will never withdraw the nomination of a candidate with such strong views of broad presidential legal immunity.
@Raineh Daze: If the Republicans cared for any of those things, this entire debacle should not even reach this point to be honest. This is no longer about logic. This is all about spite and pride.
I'm not as witty as I think I am. It's a scientifically-proven fact.I don't know...it looks like a hollow victory to me. They have let all their masks fall. And at the end of the day, the Republicans haven't really won fair and square for quite a while, without the electoral college and systematic gerrymandering, the Democrats would have been in power for nearly the whole last 20 years.
At which point by dint of Kavanaugh's appointment to the Supreme Court you have the best reason to just add some more justices because appointing him utterly disgraces it. It's stupid.
Exactly this, the idea that the Republican's irrationality is somehow a wise strategy simply isn't true. Kavanaugh can cause them a great deal of damage if appointed and likely has already caused damage, he offers nothing that a less controversial judge would not offer.
Pointless hurting yourself in the name of sunk cost fallacy and owning the libs is just stupid.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe Republican party's biggest advantage is that they simply don't care about anything. They don't care about American prestige, or American security, or anything beyond hurting as many people as possible. If more Americans paid attention to how they were getting screwed it never work, but unfortunately...
No quite, I think the republican have convinced themselves that they NEED to stay in power in other to save america, is kind of a messiah complex were american and themselves are one and the same, therefore they need to be powerfull if america wants to be one.
Either he told Mc Connel and was ignored or he purposefully did not tell him.
In the case of the latter, I think it's a dodge to avoid voting. Frankly considering how close the vote is I don't think the former is very likely.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWhen is the vote on the Senate floor going to be held? It seems like an eternity has passed. This is kind of a make or break moment for the status of men's impunity in the country. Just hoping there isn't yet another bite in the ass for all the people against what Trump represents when they have already had too much of it.
Life is unfair...I'm feeling pretty depressed and angry over all this and that one article posted earlier. I'm going to Singapore next year to finally marry my girlfriend, and it's likely I'm going to be staying there for the long term.
I'm still planning on absentee voting if I can. Still, the whole thing just leaves me bitter. I'm at the point where I'm done being polite to these dregs, but I can't afford to do anything that will get me fired or worse.
Going to a protest feels like what I should do, but I don't know if it'll make any difference in TN. Maybe if I took the weekend to go to a bigger one in DC, but money is always an issue.
Honestly, I'm constantly tempted to commit low scale vandalism or just getting a "Fuck Trump" bumper sticker, but that's never going to do much good. Best I can hope for is that my vote this year in TN makes a difference, since it is supposed to be a close race.
I don't want to leave my country knowing that it'll forever be in the grip of Republicans. Kavanaugh getting to the SCOTUS is just one more step in consolidating power for them. I don't want to be a doomsayers, but I really need some kind of win for justice, truth, and decency as of late.
I completely understand how you feel, his appointment would be a travesty against justice and all that is decent. Still, there is the very real chance that his ascension could pave the way for a post-2020 Democratic Congress+President to pack the courts and institute some real reform.
Nothing is set in stone and even if things look grim there is still opportunity for the forces of progress.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangMeh, it's just an intern. They practically grow on trees.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIt may be more an optics issue. Republicans are good at pouncing on any single thing that someone on the Democrat side does wrong and unleashing the full power of their Psychological Projection.
She's a single representative, and I'm not even sure if her seat is vulnerable. Let's not make a mountain out of an extremely unimpressive molehill.

The anger of the protestors are obviously.
