Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Apparently 800,000 people registered to vote for the midterms last week.
This could mean an increased Republican turnout, but honestly I feel more confident that this is likely better for democrats.
Kavanaugh is going down as the most unpopular SC nominee in recent history.
I'm happy to say that I'm one of those 800,000
Kavanaugh is going down as the most unpopular SC nominee in recent history.
I've said it before but if he's confirmed it could cause grievous harm for the Republicans, ironically if they fail to get him on the court then it might cause them less damage.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI think it's a bit more complicated than that. Specifically, the fact is that Kavanaugh's closet may have skeletons but I'm fairly sure a lot of Republicans have every single bit as bad a collection of awful behavior. Given the sheer horrible number of atrocities they've voluntarily supported, backing down means that their next candidate will also need to be vetted and probably have something terrible.
Because the ultra-conservatives are a field of evil assholes.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. It's because of a few reasons:
1) Like I said, it's actually kind of hard to find someone else who thinks the POTUS is above the law.
2) They're becoming increasingly emotionally invested in this because they don't want to concede anything to the Democratic Party. It's absolutely humiliating to them that this is as difficult as it is, given their numerical advantage.
3) The challenge to Kavanaugh represents an existential threat to a lot of them. It's a threat to their male privilege, much the same way Obama's victories were threats to their white privilege.
Disgusted, but not surprisedLet's not forget the Sunk Cost Fallacy. Even if Rs did wanna drop Kavanaugh, it's too late to turn back now as far as they're concerned.
i'm tired, my friendSo... another Republican senator, Ben Sasse, has kinda sorta come out against Brett Kavanaugh, maybe?
What do you guys think? Good sign? Or more false hope?
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.It's the reason I'm not putting any stock on Flake, Collins and Murkowski acting all indignant and angry at Trump for his recent behavior towards Dr. Ford and Kavanaugh. They can grandstand and be as self-righteous as they want, but until I actually see them vote against Kavanaugh, I'm not giving them a single iota of praise or credit.
Hitokiri in the streets, daishouri in the sheets. This might be the right moment for a warning: Even if you have registered in the past, better check your status. There have been stories about people having been "accidentally" scratched off the voter list. Make sure that this doesn't happen to you. They will use every trick in the book to manipulate those elections.
Well in today's bad news the White House is claiming the FBI probe turned up nothing after they completed their investigation after only investigating one of the accusers and a handful of witnesses. Democrats are rightly pointing out that the FBI was forced to operate under ludicrously narrow parameters but we all know that all the Republican Base will hear is "the FBI found nothing."

Interestingly, Corker apparently said he fully expects the final report to the Senate to leak, due to both parties wanting to make themselves look good. Which, if it does happen, will certainly have an effect on voter enthusiasm.
