Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm not linking directly to it because I don't know if it's reliable. (The big red flag for me is that the source claims the statement was made to the Washington Post, but the WP isn't reporting it at all. In fact, no mainstream news source is.)
I am assuming that Ramidel is making a belated response to this.
I agree that Daily Kos isn't a reliable source, and we shouldn't be posting links to it here.
Disgusted, but not surprisedIt starts with the story of how Devin Nunes’ family quietly runs a Dairy Farm in Iowa, in the middle of Steve King’s district, but has seemingly been actively trying to conceal, but quickly turns into a deep dive into the Agricultural Industry’s dependence on undocumented labor, and why Republicans would support people like Steve King, who’s hardline immigration stances would likely destroy their livelihoods.
I’m not going to put it here, because it’s really long, but it’s very much worth a read.

Ugh, looks like they might have slipped SOPA or some other shitty copyright law into the new NAFTA, as one of the points is "supporting a 21st Century economy through new protections for U.S. intellectual property, and ensuring opportunities for trade in U.S. services".

I guess Trudeau can kiss a second term goodbye, while the Canadian populist right will be giddy knowing that the Canadian populace will be pissed at this.

Aren't Canadians technically more protectionist of their economy than the US? Chances are they're not going to be happy with these new NAFTA terms, which are explicitly meant to benefit only US businesses.

The latest Last Week Tonight is all about Brett Kavanaugh... and the new Flyers mascot.
As usual, John Oliver nails it.

So far nothing looks particularly severe. Farmers are gonna be pissed about their new Class 7 pricing being gone so soon, but meh. Unless some big change unknown till now comes about, I doubt it'll affect Trudeau too much.
As far as I can tell the deal is basically the status quo with one or two minor adjustments. It's basically the usual crab, Trump having a giant temper tantrum in order to get more or less the same agreements the US had before, but now Trump can claim them as his achievement.
NATO and the EU even managed this by simply rewording a few minor points.
Colour me more relieved than anything.
Chapter 19 was maintained entirely, supply management was only subject to minor adjustments and is here to stay, and the updates (good and bad) have been happening in other trade deals anyway.
Yep, its a bullet dodged, though the national security tariffs are still up and there's zero guarantee they will stop or be dropped.
The major downside is that it gives Trump a win to tout domestically before the Midterms, but that was never a core consideration.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. One group that's not happy about the new NAFTA? Canadian milk producers
.
They took a minor hit, true enough. The thing is, the Conservatives likely would have sold out their entire industry, and no other party has a prayer of forming government. Had Clinton won and signed on to TPP, they'd be in almost the same boat.
They'd be best off pushing country of origin labels, and selling their stuff over American products, playing off health concerns and/or anti-Americanism as required.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. That's non-news.
There was no scenario where they'd have been happy.
NAFTA could've been re-ratified as it were, and they'd be writing about how unhappy they were. Obviously any consession on the dairy bit would have them complain.
Yeah, the best thing for the milk producers to do now would probably be to push the nationalism angle in their advertising.
Anyone else feel like the name is tailored towards appeasing Trump's ego? Just thinking that because we've gone from "North-American" to a listing of countries where the US is placed first. And he's just childish enough to think that's important.
Glad to see that the White House backed down due to the public outcry, now we'll just see what the FBI can dig up in the allotted time.
