There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Two huge examples existing in a country where most sexual predators are punished makes no sense logically, if rape culture wasn't as powerful as it is we wouldn't have Donald Trump as President and Brett Kavanaugh would not be close to becoming a Supreme Court judge.
I'm a dude, I completely understand how it may seem unreal that women are so often preyed upon and their victimizers left unpunished but that's the reality of the situation. Denying it helps no-one.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWell, color me stunned: It seems the White House is controlling the FBI investigation into Brett Kavanaugh
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.I'm not arguing about rape culture or anything. I'm taking issue with the idea that people usually get away with it, cases like Trump and Kavanaugh are special because they have power, money, and rabid devotees backing them up, something that's not the case for... well, most people in general.

The handy-dandy RAINN chart
. Only 6 out of every 1000 will end up incarcerated.
I did not know that existed. But again, that gets away from what I was arguing, or at least intend to be arguing, although that's partially my fault for being flaky. My point is that the vast majority of people aren't going to commit any kind of sexual crimes, it's just that the ones who do and get caught and convicted get (rightly) raked over the coals and that colours the narratives.

Apologies to any scumbags I insulted. Not sure what you are arguing...fact is that if so many people were comfortable to vote for Trump despite the "grab them by the pussy" tape paired with multiple sexual assault and one rape allegation being out there is shows that in addition to all those people who commit assault and get away with it, there is also a huge group of people ready to excuse such a behaviour. And that is why in turn so many people get away with it.
This is the UK, laws and culture are lax over here, the age to buy booze is 18 and the age to consume booze on your own private property is 5, at age 16 your allowed a beer with a meal at a restaurant.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI'm not sure what I'm arguing at this point either. I think I'm just saying don't judge huge swaths of the population by the actions of a relative few. Or at least, that's what I initially meant to say.

, this will never be solved if you treat it as something done by "a relative few".
It's a structural issue of our culture that can only be addressed by addressing toxic masculinity and misogyny, I'm sure you don't mean to cause harm but this argument is deeply harmful and it does nothing more than help defend the men who actually cause harm.
Simply because in a world where only special criminals can engage in sex crimes than the argument that "he was a good boy with great prospects" will continue to be an effective argument.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI don't see how treating rape as something done by "a relative few" detracts from the seriousness of the issue. The heinousness of the act itself remains.

Except as the link I provided earlier demonstrates it's not about "humans are bastards" or "it's a few bad apples", there are very strong cultural forces of misogyny and toxic masculinity that lead to large numbers of men harassing or assaulting women.
There just isn't anything factual to the idea that the people who do it get crucified over it, just look at our President and the ascending Supreme Court judge.
