Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yep, Toxic Masculinity is the main problem. Because, don't forget, alcohol removes your inhibition, but that doesn't mean that it makes you do something you wouldn't do without rational thinking in place. So if you think deep down you are entitled to get whatever you want from the females around you, and only don't say that openly due to your rationale telling you that it won't be appreciated, naturally you act out the moment all barriers are removed. While if it isn't just rational thinking which keeps your urges in check but instead said urges aren't there because you were raised to believe in equality and in respecting other human beings, you are waaaay less likely to act out when you are drunk.
In a way getting someone drunk is the most honest view you can get of him or her.
Speaking of toxic masculinity and drinking and assault…
The Twitter thread doesn’t go exactly how you would think.

So Fox made a right decision but...goddamn.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I want to tell a story: Once in high school, I felt insecure, I put on a tight top too low cut and dark lipstick I didn't usually wear. I went to a party drank terrible wine coolers, too many of them. A man asked me if I wanted to leave, I slurred, said maybe. He said "maybe"?
Aww, that's really nice, I wish every male is as properly socialized as they were.
It just goes to show that "boys will be boys" couldn't be further from the truth, males can be socialized properly if we would just try and stop apologizing for the one's who aren't.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe problem with sexual assault is that you can never know when it will happen. You can do something incredible risky and nothing happens, or you can be in an environment in which you don't expect anything to happen and yet it does.
In a way I am not surprised about Fox's reaction. Here is the thing with Doctor Ford: She is part of the elite. When the Fox viewers see her and listen to her, they see themselves and they see their own daughters being in this situation.
I am sure it would be different if the victim were, well, anything but an intelligent white woman from a wealthy family.
I doubt their sincerity even in that case.
Mostly, I'm of the opinion they're doing everything to drag their feet but even the Republicans are exhausted with their constant defense.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Admittedly guessing, but I'd be willing to bet that toxic masculinity, for the most part, has at most a negligible effect on how most guys act. It's just that the people who do actually do something because of it do something really bad, and get huge amounts of coverage because of it.
... dangit the discussion moved on me.
As for Fox... either Even Evil Has Standards or damage control. I'm betting on the latter.

Hopefully I'll feel confident to change my avatar off this scumbag soon. Apologies to any scumbags I insulted.Regarding the FBI being a net good or not... I mean, the Head of the FBI was the one who effectively put Trump into office.
Seriously, fuck Comey.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.I think a lot of people assign malice to that when it was:
"Investigate! Investigate!"
[investigates]
"There's nothing here."
"DO IT AGAIN!"
"okay."
[investigates]
"OH MY GOD! YOU RUINED HILLARY!"

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. It is, at the kindest, incredibly stupid to go "know what? I'm going to give credence to the 'but her emails crowd' two weeks before the election" and not think it would, you know, affect the election.
And even if it's stupidity... So what? Still fuck Comey. That doesn't make his actions any better or him more deserving of his post.
Comey sold his country out to Trump, either out of stupidity or malice and deserves all of our scorn.

There are no words to properly express how much I agree with you, Comey will always be on my shit list.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangYeah, F... Comey.
I don't give Fox any credit. I am just saying that they wouldn't have even said that the victim tells the truth if she had been anything but a well-off, educated white woman who acted with so much deference during the hearing that saying anything against her directly is akin to kicking a puppy. So she is just "mistaken about identical" instead of "hysterical over nothing" or making something up to deliberately damage a good man's career. That's why they attack the democrats instead.
If you are admittedly guessing...why are you assuming it's negligible? It's a serious problem in our society.
And no, most people who do shitty things because of it do not get huge coverage. Most people who commit sexual assault get away with it. A lot of times it's not even reported, for very understandable reasons.
Disgusted, but not surprised![]()
A lot of people do, though. Remember the statistic which got quoted during the hearing? One out of the three woman and one out of six men in the US have been sexually assaulted and most of the people who did it never face any charges. Hell, the US was comfortable with voting someone who bragged about it on camera into office.
Guessing, assuming, the point is I'm not saying anything for certain. As much as Humans Are Bastards on a grand enough scale, individual people will tend to be decent, it's just that the ones who aren't get all the attention. Admittedly that wasn't the best warning, yes, most people who do it get away in relative silence, but the ones who don't get justifiably crucified over it.
1/3 women and 1/6 men experiencing sexual assault doesn't mean that a majority, or even a large percent of, the population is sexually assaulting people. Do statistics exist for the number of people who actually commit the assaults?

Definitely the media exaggerates it. Students getting drunk and partying is usually more fun to watch than students, well, doing actual college work.
