Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes.
You don't get to so cavalierly dismiss a very possible idea like that, Kavanaugh could very well damage the court's credibility enough to make impeachment or court packing viable. There is nothing rational about dismissing the possibility without strong evidence.
It's hysterics, the idea that the confirmation of Kavanaugh would lead to women fleeing the country is ridiculous and says far more about you then it does about them. What's more realistic is that it will lead them to vote for Democrats in droves.
I mean for fuck's sake there are women living in Afghanistan, try to keep some perspective. This isn't enough to cause an unprecedented demographics change like that.
You really have to get over your fixation on the idea of people fleeing the country, that's your thing, not a real phenomenon people seriously support.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangDonnelley is a Democrat. Liberal outrage is gonna scare him more than Conservative outrage. He playing this the way he had to- vote No, but make a show of thinking about it so it's clear he's not just doing what the party wanted him to. And, of course, Collins and Murkowski weren't afraid of Conservative outrage enough of it to prevent them from killing the Obamacare repeal.
The confirmation is by no means inevitable. It's never been inevitable. I'd even go as far as to say it's got less than a 50% chance of happening at this point.
Saying 'oh, this bad thing that everyone's spend the last few weeks wondering whether or not is gonna happen is totally inevitable, don't be fooled by any evidence to the contrary' is... not quite hysteria, but it is a very grating brand of delusional pessimism.
But yeah, that's certainly hysteria. I didn't read Mario's post carefully enough to catch that piece of outright hysteria.

I mean, certain people support it, aren't we undergoing a bit of a brain drain from scientist moving to other countries?
But some massive exodus of women in general because Kavanuagh being on the Supreme Court is tantamount to a death sentence? Yeah, that's sort of completely ridiculous.

Yeah, this is absolutely possible, the important difference between women and trained professionals as demographics is that belonging to the latter means that you have the education and resources to successfully immigrate where you want. While having a vagina offers no such benefits.
Hence why it's so ridiculous.
(I realize you're not saying otherwise I'm just explaining my logic)
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangNah. It's because Flake and Coons are in a closed-door meeting, per CNN.
...Yeah, it was a break.
UPDATE: Flake is asking for a delay by a week for an FBI investigation.
Yeah, this is not going to happen, knowing the GOP.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherApparently, Flake is calling for a week-long delay so that the FBI can conduct an investigation.

Oh God! Natural light!Flake saying he'll vote to advance Kavanaugh to the floor with that understanding.
Wait til the GOP dupes him again.
Obviously, he won't get his FBI investigation. The question is whether or not Flake will confirm Kavanaugh in the final vote.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherI don't really understand Flake's game here, to be honest. Like, he's not running re-election. He'll be out in November no matter what happens. Why is he running around like this instead of just owning his opinion, whatever that may be?
I would not expect a week to be long enough for a full FBI investigation, though. Surely that kinda thing takes time, especially when we're talking about something happened decades ago.

Maybe he wants McSally to win his seat?
"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherBecause this is his opinion. He's onboard with Kavanaugh so long as the guy isn't a rapist. Thus, requesting an investigation.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.And chances are, he won't get it, but will still confirm Kavanaugh anyway, because he clearly doesn't want a Democrat taking his open seat.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherI don't see how Flake voting "yes" for this could make a Democrat taking his seat somehow less likely. If anything it would probably just energize Democratic voters in Arizona some more.
And I'd imagine the most likely effect would be none at all, really.

Jesus Christ, what does Kavanaugh have to do with who wins Jeff Flake's seat? Trump only won Arizona by 3.5 points and soured there since Mc Cain's funeral fiasco. You're really trying hard to justify why Kavanaugh will be confirmed no matter what. We get it.

Life is unfair...![]()
Republicans live in an alternate reality where voting for Trump's preferences will boost up the base to vote. Worse, as their special election losses mount, they're isolating themselves into this reality more than ever.
Every single Republican voted for tax cuts last year because otherwise they felt they would lose support from their donors and by extension their base.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherYes they live in an alternate reality which is why you should not take their propaganda at face value, they hope that this will spur the base on to vote but I see no evidence that it's anything other than delusion.
What will happen if he's confirmed is that Democratic turnout will receive a shot in the arm and women could very likely turn out in droves to vote against Republicans, both of which together could mean horrible things for them electorally.
