Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Come to think of it, I also get grossed out by "guy talk". Like, when I'm with my brother in law with our mutual friends without women... eugh.
But it gets WORSE when all my sister and bil's friends get together. It's like they're trying to "out gross" each other.
May terrible things were said during our Star Wars marathon in February... many.
Also, I've totally contributed to patriarchy when I was younger and dumber. I reject those views now and wish I was called out on them when I said them. I hope to teach my nephew about these things.
Not sure if this has been brought up, but even Alan Dershowitz is now calling for an FBI investigation into the Kavanaugh claims
to better get to the truth of the matter.
Donelly pledges to vote against Kavanaugh.
And last night, Donelly, Manchin, Collins, and Murkowski said they expected to all vote the same. If the other three vote the same as Donelly...
I prefer to insulate myself in probabilities, the odds are looking good that he'll pass but he may not but even if he does then it could very likely harm the Republicans grievously in the midterms. And even if he doesn't pass then this likely could hurt them anyway, the women of the nation are watching this travesty and I would be shocked if they like what they see.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI'm remaining pessimistic until I hear commitments from Republicans. Donnelly is a Democrat. The news isn't that he's voting No. The news is that he would even consider voting Yes.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I’ll believe it when I see it.
Re: privilege. I think of privilege as more acknowledging that you’re running a race while carrying less weights.
Theoretically, everyone should be running in just their shirt/shorts/shoes. Equal start, equal chance.
But if you’re a woman? Add a 5 lb weight on each ankle. Black? Add another 5 lbs per ankle (not saying sexism and racism are equally severe/detrimental; just an example). Poor? Add more weight. Etc.
So you can have trained hard, and run hard, and you can be proud of what you achieve. But you can also acknowledge that you don’t carry that weight. I’m a woman. I carry that weight. But I’m not carrying the weight of poverty, or of being non-white, etc.

And while you're running the race, onlookers are taking potshots at you and jeering at you. And even if you do win despite all that, you're either used as an excuse to claim that things aren't that bad or you're accused of sleeping your way to the top. Or people whine about Affirmative Action. Anything to downplay your accomplishments and/or avoid acknowledging systemic issues.

I only know the official rules for Presidential impeachment, but I'd think that a Supreme Court impeachment would similarly require a two-thirds vote in the Senate, which is mathematically impossible to achieve before 2021.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It could be possible to impeach Kavanaugh if a couple of red state Republican Senators who voted for him lose their reelection bids. Mainly because those who don't want to share that fate may support an impeachment motion.
As for falsely accusing someone of sexual assault, I can think of some motives:
- Mistaken identity: Someone mistakes person A for a sexual assaulter but actually it was person B.
- Mistake of fact: Someone perceives an act to be sexual assault but it isn't.
- Malice: Someone trying to character assassinate someone else. Rape accusations are after all hard to prove and also to disprove.
- Weaselly malice: Mutual accusation of sexual assault (whether it is possible for two people to rape each other, mutually, is something I am not terribly interested in finding out)
It's...not hysteria.
BTW...reading Donnelly's statement, I got a feeling his opposition won't stick once conservatives go batshit and poll numbers show him dropping.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam Gallagher

is one of those thing that it kinda sore you over, specially since is about yourself.
Sure, my point is just that it's not a mutually exclusive choice between "be proud of what you've done" and "acknowledge the privilege you benefit from", it's more than possible to do both.
