Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think Trump's bonkers statements about him not meeting with Trudeau at the UNGA, insulting the Canadian negotiators and him making it clear he wants to follow through on Canadian car tariffs may have just been the death blow for NAFTA and Canada's trading relationship with the US forever.
I can't see the Canadian populace wanting to buy anything American-made, including movies from America, after this.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherTrump's tariffs are having real consequences towards our relationship with our allies. Even if Trump is gone, the shadow that someone worse than him will some day in the future be elected president will hang above the US for a long time.
Why do you think so many foreign leaders are saying it's time to stop trusting the US?

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherYes, Trump's terribleness is causing horrible damage to our soft power. That's true.
But do you know what isn't true? The idea that they could afford to just never trade with us, our economy is just too big for that. Trump is causing more than enough damage without being ridiculous about it.

China disagrees.

Canada isn't China.

No china relies on America buying it's cheaply made mass produced goods,if America stopped trading them their economy would suffer, they can't afford to take the risk of aliening their biggest trading partner

have a listen and have a link to my discord server@Fourthspartan56: That same logic applies doubly to China and (when its economy eventually comes into its own) India. Trump is at most a symptom of the overall decline of American power, the fundamental reason for it is the "rise of the rest"; much like it became untenable for the European colonial powers to dominate the non-industrialized parts of the world with an iron fist in the early to mid 20th century, it's becoming increasingly difficult for the US to dictate world affairs as less and less of the global economy and population is centered on the United States and its dependencies/allies.
@Garcon: Just like the last 20 times people said China was about to implode?

Mario 1995, what exactly do you get out of acting as if the worst thing is always going to happen?
I can't imagine the stress of it must be good for you.

As more allegations emerge, Republicans are becoming more defensive of Kavanaugh than ever.
This won't end well.
Ever been to Twitter? A lot of people have that mentality, including respected personalities like journalists and political scientists.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherIt's pretty near collapsing. There are massive soldier riots and it can't keep building those ghost cities forever to keep it's population busy.
China is going to have to drastically shift how it manages it's economy and military very soon if it wants to stay even remotely relevant as a global economic player or a local military power and all signs point to it not being able to survive such a shift without there being an upheaval.
Oh really when?@LeGarcon: Meanwhile credible economists project China's economy as passing that of the US some time in the 2020s or 2030s. Gordan Chang (or George Friedman) is a hack, and people should really stop taking him seriously. Expecting China to just fall apart on its own is pure Hubris.
Some conspiracy theory about a coup attempt back in August I think. If it were real I'm pretty sure we'd have gotten leaks about it from sources in the American intelligence community.

That's where I, and practically everyone else here, gets most news.
Anyway, this allegation of Kavanaugh slamming a woman in a bar twenty years ago really puts the "he was too young" defense up in smoke. In fact, I'd be shocked if Kavanaugh didn't commit any sort of abuse during his years as district judge.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherAll the veteran riots all throughout Zhenjiang earlier this summer? And the earlier ones in spring in Henan?
I dunno what the hell you're on about with coup attempts. They're soldiers rioting because they have no severance pay or food.

Oh really when?

Unless its somehow struck down by the Courts, yes.
